Tiger's back
« on: August 04, 2014, 01:27:58 AM »
Tiger withdrew today with more back problems. Didn't look good at all. Is he done for the PGA Championship next week and for the season? Out of the Ryder Cup?

I'd say all of the above. He might try the PGA, but I don't think he'll finish.

Yeah the thread title confused me for a bit too. Really? he's back? A guy who hasn't won a major in 6 years? OH his actual back. Yes, that.

OK, the thread title was a bit ambiguous. Meant to start a discussion about his back probs.

That said, today's round at the PGA clearly poves that Tiger is not "back" in the performance sense.

I wonder if he will ever be.

I don't think he will ever be "back" to dominating like he did in the late 90's early 2000's. He has had many health problems with his knees, back, and isn't getting any younger (he's 38  :surprised:), plus there is a lot of new young blood that while aren't as dominate as Tiger was the Rorys and Keymers and Watson's and many others supply a lot of pressure. He still should end up beating out Nicklaus for all time Major victories but this idea of him being just going out and winning a Major tourny especially since it's been 6 years since his last Major victory is just ludicrous and needs to stop. He'll get there, but at like a victory a year, maybe.

I'm not sure he'll beat out Jack now for majors, but he'll win at least one more.

Kind of sad really, he came out the gate so strong and then fizzled out at the peak of his game.  14 majors is still an unbelievable achievement but I thought he would run away with it and put up something like 20.

5 years or so ago I did too. It seemed like it was just a matter of time, but his body has broken down and I think the off the course stuff got into his head. Plus, I think there are a lot of good younger golfers out there, and more golfers that are athletes or at least that work on being better athletes (strength and conditioning, etc.) which makes them better golfers. I think Rory will probably get to double digits in majors for example.

_fan, you're brilliant no question there, but I disagree.  Tiger will never win a major again.

I'm possibly judging Tiger too much based on what he once was, no doubt. I just think he'll have one major yet where he puts things together and is healthy. If he does he can still be pretty darn good. We'll see.

He's definitely done this week. He needs to put the bag on the shelf and rest.

a tough time to rest. FedEx Cup about to start, Ryder Cup looming.. but you're probably right.

the question is, what does Watson do with Tiger and the cup?

He's just prolonging the inevitable. Watson already said he'll take Tiger if he's playing well and healthy. He's not.

I've dealt with back issues since an incident in the Navy in 1996. Once it's tweaked, there's no healing without rest.

Tiger's back fails him again. Guy needs to take several months off and heal up.

He's not playing in neither the Ryder Cup nor the FedEx Cup.

Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson says he'll make Tiger a captain's pick if Tiger tells him he's healthy and playing well. I suspect Tiger will say just that. Trouble is, Tiger didn't qualify for the FedX and it's unlikely he'll cross the pond to test his game on the Euro Tour in the next few weeks. So how will Tom know if Tiger is playing well?

Tiger tells Watson not to pick him. Just gained a bit more respect for TW.
