Not locking your doors is the sophisticated cousin of not wearing your seatbelt.

 Like a thief is going to haul off kitchen cabinets. Is there a huge black market (seems like a racist term?) I'm not aware of for cabinets?

Some punk kids could come vandalize them.

Also, there are 2 motorcycles with keys in them.  :shakesfist:

1 seatbelt conveniently located right where you are already sitting vs like 20 doors and windows scattered all around the house.  stupid analogy.

In my experience, people who steal crap will steal whatever's not nailed down behind a closed garage door. Also, lol at night/shadows being racist.

I've always figured that if someone wants to break into your house, they're going to break in no matter what.

I've always figured they went for the easiest/highest value target.

I live in a relatively rough part of town that's directly off of the interstate that serves as the major north-south artery for goods moving between mexico and the rest of the us so yes, everything's locked 24/7.

locked house with the house dwellers not being in town is a much, much, much easier target than an unlocked, occupied house.

for sure, but unlocked unoccupied house is an easier target than a locked occupied house.

You were on the right track, michcat, but I think that the 'I don't lock' people are more similar to the 'I don't have a tv' people

the seatbelt analogy was used because it also reduces risk with minimal effort. not watching tv doesn't reduce risk of anything, although it is kind of lifestyle braggy.

comparing not locking your door with not wearing seatbelt is lol worthy.  similar to not building bunker for meteor strike/nuclear bombing to not wearing sunblock.

I don't see any downside to locking doors. it doesn't take any more effort than shutting the door and has some benefits (level of benefit determined by how shitty of a neighborhood you live in I guess).

Since we moved into our new neighborhood I've been hanging out outside with my shirt off quite a bit, just so if anyone is scoping out our house to rob it they know exactly what they're signing up for.
