Why do we love baseball (Non-team specific thread)
« on: June 28, 2014, 12:16:03 AM »
ITT, I invite all of you to post your reasons why you love baseball. The reasons should have nothing to do with favorite teams, players, etc...just why you love this great game of baseball.

Baseball is like a three hour long chess match. It's beautiful. A true thinking man's game. Most people's critique is that the game is too slow, but to me the pace is what makes the action all the more exciting. There's a tension that exists in the battle between pitcher and hitter. When the tension is broken by a ball in play, it really gets the blood pumping. Also, there isn't a sport with better smells. Freshly cut grass, a brand new baseball, the smell of the leather on a choice baseball glove. Also, the uniforms are classy as eff.

Baseball is the most unique of any major team sport, and it isn't close. Basketball, football, hockey, soccer, rugby, polo, water polo, etc. all have the same primary goal of the offense penetrating the opponent's defense and getting an item of value (puck, ball, whatever) into a goal.  Baseball is completely opposite.

Another thing is that though a baseball player is perhaps more dependent on his teammates for team success, the actual play of the game is more individual than any other sport.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Pitcher:

You against the other team, literally on an island with no help.  You are the sole reason the batter is in the box and he is 100% focused on you, so is the crowd, so are your teammates, so is the homeplate umpire, also the other team.  No other sport has this kind of pressure/intensity on a single person.

Yeah go ahead and say football and the QB.  Welp direct snap to the RB, does and can happen.  Baseball the pitcher is the primary person, without him, there would be no game because nobody would deliver the ball.

Does he like the pressure, of course he does, he is a gamer.  He understands this game is on him, he is the one that gets a record, Wins and Loses.  Does he care, no, he goes out there everyday and competes his rough ridin' heart out.

So the SS makes a game losing error, who gets the L, the pitcher, there is not a more individualistic team sport than baseball.

If you don't understand/appreciate it, I feel sorry for you, because this is the greatest sport in the world.

just because you were the worst person to ever play the sport, like ever, doesn't mean you have to hate on it.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball." Is there any sports movie that makes you want to call your dad more than FoD?

Also, baseball has no time limit. Could theoretically go on forever.

you can skip the first 7 innings because they generally don't matter, makes the 9 hour game a lot shorter

there's like 160 games, so each individual game doesn't matter one bit!

naps!  naps are great and baseball is like the best sport ever to nap to, just ask metalheads dad.  also synergistic with the point about skipping most of the game and individual games not mattering!

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Baseball caps are the best team apparel out there.

Nothing is better for commutes or long drives than listening to a baseball game on the radio.

Very few games go to the ninth inning without the losing team having a good chance to win. Basketball and football games are often over with 5+ minutes left. Nope, not baseball.

no time limit and the fact that game strategy is basically the same regardless of score and inning make it great. you can't start just fouling the crap out of the other team if you're down five late in the game and similar type things.

it's two games in one!

like for half the time you are in the field with your team and you're all wearing gloves trying to catch the ball and then the other half of the time you are in the dugout eating sunflower seeds and hot footing people while occasionally grabbing a bat to mash the ball with. it's like a real life sporting bogo.
