is PP more of a gift or a curse?

gift, but you are right to note that it can be a huge curse in certain situations (i would imagine).

also i have a really good ear, not perfect pitch, but the next best level right under that, so if someone's off key, in any context, i usually say something about it. like if a person changes key in the first five seconds of the national anthem (happens all the time), i will absolutely point it out to those around me
True story and maybe belongs in stud thing thead... tdaver, tdaverbro, tdaverbigsis, and tdaverlilsis all have perfect pitch.  The national anthem thing is like nails on a chalkboard.

Love it. LOVE IT. Do you guys also bug out when people sing Happy Birthday without first establishing a pitch on which to start? A bunch of clowns at my work just try to start singing all at the same time and no one blows a pitch pipe or anything. I feel embarrassed for them because they just sorta swim around in this awful and ambiguous undefined tonal area for like two lines until they somehow sync up.

omg yep. i don't like to show off but it is in this situation that i establish myself as the clear vocal leader and really set the key on the first HA- of "HAPPY". people usually fall in line. but you're right the "1, 2, 3, go.." approach is excruciating.

Ha.  I'm the designated happy bday starter when with the inlaws.

Some elite universities transpose melodic and harmonic dictation to make sure their students with perfect pitch have to still think about the intervallic relationship between notes  :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:

Gift for sure but there are a few negatives like listening to people that can't sing try to sing.  I grew up going to a church that sang a capella.  That could wander all over the place.

Also my high school music teachers would jack with me just for fun now and then, like starting a song in a different key than shown in the music.  Everyone else just sings away in blissful ignorance and I'm standing there looking at him with a "what the hell are you doing" look on my face.  He would just laugh and then start again in the right key.

I used to be pretty snobby about chain restaurants.  I'm not any more. I mean, I still prefer the local joint, but I'm not going to act like I'm too good for Chili's or whatever.

Not a big fan of snobs in general, and most snobs would do well to receive a good punch in the nose.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

I think it's more the people that think they have it.  I bet most of them are still mediocre singers.

I don't think perfect pitch has Jack crap to do with singing well, necessarily.

impressionist paintings
you don't like any of them or you distinguish the good ones from bad?

If my impressionist paintings are not a Cassatt or better, GTFO

How do you feel about the work being done by Arnold Levine?

It is a benefit to a singer to have it.  It does not make you a good singer.  Like a palate to a chef.  Now you both look silly.

Honestly I think a lot of people have a decent idea of what perfect pitch is but not a super good idea of what it really is and its applications.  :th_twocents:

P.S. TDAVER PLZ START A PERFECT PITCH THREAD!!!!   :excited:

I will join the group that is snobby about concerts. I like small venues, not so much for acoustics, but for a more intimate show.

Most important to me is seeing a band in their prime.  I've seen too many bands about 3 albums too late.  They play a bunch of their shitty new stuff, their biggest hits, and then maybe 3 or 4 songs off their good albums.

I'm definitely snobby as crap about terrible pop music. Like, I talk crap on it basically whenever I can. I'm also very snobby about shitty TV that people waste their time with. I don't talk nearly as much crap about that, though, at least not openly.

Guys, which is worse: a coffee snob or a beer snob? I'm neither but I would say coffee snob is slightly worse because at least with beer you can get faced while some dude is boring the crap out of you with talk about which pilsner is the pilsner-iest.

Ooh, that's a good one. Hey can we get like an emoticon thing of, like, two cartoony-looking potatoes that are purple and are, like riding a harley? Could use it instead of typing 'taters? I mean I think typing 'taters is extremely hilarious but an emoticon for it would be pretty funny, too.
