A few weeks ago I posted in F3's cooking board about cooking for some vegan friends who were coming over, and I was intrigued by the response and assistance from stud goEMAW posters like ChiCat and SluCat. I also read an article recently about Arian Foster (and some other NFL puds) going to vegan or largely-vegan diets. After a thorough and detailed search of gE that took ~10 seconds, I determined that there was no permanent thread on this topic and that we should probably add this to our Combo-Fanning canon.

Guidelines:
-This is a no GPC zone. Meat-lovers (shout-out to AST!) are encouraged to post in this thread, but are not allowed to be dumb about veganism/vegetarianism. This is a thread for grown-ups and is intended for the  and the .

Possible items to discuss in this thread:

-Even if you are not vegetarian/vegan, do you have any desire to learn to cook more vegetarian/vegan meals? (Looking at you, AST.)
-Have you ever eaten vegetarian/vegan for an extended period of time? Share your experience!
-Is your significant other a vegan/vegetarian? Is it an issue at all?
-Do you have any delish vegan or vegetarian recipes?
-If you have a reasoned argument against veganism/vegetarianism, what is it?
-Did you know that vanilla soy milk tastes like melted ice cream? It does, and it rules. (Regular milk also rules.)

Okay, friends. Remember the No GPCing rule, and let's really have at it.

My initial thoughts:

I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian, but I'm pretty intrigued by both and think I could probably do it for an extended period of time. However, I'm totally grossed out by food that is trying too hard to be other food.

Hummus or falafel?  :excited:
Black bean burgers?
Textured soy protein that is pretending to be chicken nuggets?  :Yuck:

But seriously, hundreds of millions of people around the world are totally vegan or like 95% vegan. Seems like it can't be that bad, right?

I actually tried to do a few days where I didn't eat meat, I honestly don't give a crap except for people who are over the top about it (like pretty much anything) but I really couldn't do it.  Every meal was just weird, it was missing something.

I made a salad out of Spinach and Green leaf lettuce from my Garden! :D

But it was a side dish for the ribeye steak I ate.  :frown:

IMO the stuff that tries to emulate meat products is pretty gross.  just do your own thing, veggies!

i'm pretty good at destroying some random tofu stir fries :lick:

I ate a vegetarian diet for about sixth months at one point. It's hard to not chow down on carbs all the time. So in the end it's way worse for you than eating meat.

I'm your huckleberry.  Will have more time later, gotta pack up and head to the lake house villa, tho.  Not a strict vegetarian, but I do think a mostly plant-based diet is a sensible thing.  Our bodies should be respected. Too many folks don't realize the importance of diet until it's too late. When you do eat meat, make it a special meat treat, that's what I always say.

i once ate whole wheat bread, tortillas and corn chips only for 40 days, that has to be vegan or at least vegetarian i'm assuming.  it was a great experience but not sustainable long term.

on tofu.  everytime i eat tofu at restaurants i'm all like "this is delicious."  here's the problem, everytime i make it at home i'm all like "this is the opposite of delicious."  so my question is, are there different grades/qualities/consistancies of tofu (i mean there has got to be right?) and which ones are good when preparing which dishes?  i'm sure i could google it but if i wanted to put that much effort in i'd rather grill a hot dog and eat tofu when i'm eating out.

In an effort to lose weight I once ate raw vegatables and fruit mostly for 60 days.  I say mostly because
On  friday and saturdays I would drink lots of beer and eat a normal dinner ( smaller tho).  This regimen
Was very hard for the first week then pretty easy after that.  I started at 226 and finished at 183, two years later I am 195.
it’s not like I’m tired of WINNING, but dude, let me catch my breath.

I went from eating red meat as probably 80% of the meat I eat to probably around 20% now.  I eat a bunch of chicken though.  I don't buy that all meat is bad for you.  We are physically designed to eat it.

I have no issue with those who don't dig meat,  but just trying to think about what meal planning day to day would be for my family without chickens, eggs, chz, milk, etc is exhausting.

i just don't really like to handle it/cook it myself and eat it while out (friends, restaurant, etc).  probably cook with it every 2 weeks or so?

that said, ast's cooking thread gets me all katdaddy :lick:

Totally agree.  The egg plant, cauliflower and chick pea dishes are awesome.  And, I am typically not a huge veggie eater.

However, I do eat about 4-5 Boca Burgers a week.
