window seat question
« on: April 29, 2014, 10:14:33 AM »
when flying, is the person in the window seat the supreme ruler of the window shade? like, if you have the window seat, do you even bother asking your fellow passengers for their preference?

supreme ruler
When one person, for whatever reason, has a chance to lead an exceptional life, he has no right to keep it to himself.

Absolutely. Absolutely not.

If they want to speak up and tell their preference that is fine. But I'm still in control.

It's not your job to ask, but if they ask you to close it, you should comply out of courtesy.

If they ask to have it open, just laugh in their face and say you are the supreme commander

i prefer closed because i'm afraid of flying and prefer not to look outside, but a passenger asked me to open it. i opened it halfway (it seemed like a fair compromise), and she asked for it to be opened all the way.

i wanted to slam the shade shut and be the supreme ruler, but instead i opened it all the way.  :frown:

i don't feel comfortable answering this question because her husband is seated between us and it's hard to tell if he is taking occasional glances at my computer screen.

is the aisle seat really that desirable? i like to use the (closed) window as a pillow, and am just generally distracted by people walking by, fumbling with their luggage in the overhead compartments, etc. i assume that easy access to the bathroom is the big plus.

that is insanely rude.  c'mon people, we are all in this flying world together.  window seat controls the window shade.

rake, you need to get up to go to the bathroom AT LEAST a half dozen times

I like it open when im landing but when were taking off and in the air I want that crap closed. especially if youre right next to the wing and its sunny out.

the answer the OP, you don't have to ask them if they want it open or closed. if they ask you to close it, close it. if they ask you to open it, tell them youre not a big fan of flying and they can look across the isle if they must.

where are you flying into j rake? someplace cool where you wanna see the landing?

he is 6-foot-2 (taller) and sits campfire style, with his knees contorted in a way that it somehow doesn't enter into my space or his wife's.

Fully agree here, and for this reason alone she shouldn't get her way

short flights: supreme ruler, and if you are in aisle or middle and ask to raise it, you're a piece of crap
long international flights: That crap better stay down unless a meal's being served
