two baseball questions/musings:

1)  batting practice.  why do they practice at hitting pitches that are purposely easy to hit?  how does that make sense?  shouldn't they practice by trying to hit pitches that are like the ones they'll actually hit in games?

2)  inventing pitching machines.  shouldn't someone invent a pitching machine that you could program to produce pitches like the pitcher you're going to play next.  like you just program in the rotation and velocity and angle and all of that and it produces pitches that are really similar to what any given pitcher throws.  wouldn't practicing with something like that help the hitters hit the real pitcher?

batting practice is about mechanics of your swing, muscle memory etc.

In the indoor training areas there are machines that can replicate some movement.

At that level they can all hit the pitch if they know it's coming.

sure, there's not much incentive to try and gain a small advantage.  team's wouldn't be interested in that.

also, i don't think it's true that the hitters can hit anything if they know it's coming.  look at herrera, he pretty much just throws a fastball and changup, and throws the fastball way, way more.  so there's no reason for any hitter to expect anything but fastballs.  and they don't seem to hit him that great.

i think the whole pitch recognition stuff that people always talk about is pretty much bullshit anyways.

sys, I don't know about the machine because I think there are a lot of head games going on. Unless someone could punch a button that dictated what the machine was going to pitch, I don't think it'd be very helpful. But I've been a baseball fan for like 400 days so who the hell knows.

Screw the Twins. Lost in 10 after rally in 9th.  They are pesky but they are not 90 win team IMO.

We are going to be AL Central champs and #1 AL seed

First blown save for Perkins. This could demoralize the entire team and send them into a tailspin.

You can thank your favorite non-Royal Brett Lawrie for that Twins loss, kind of.

Greinke now has 43.2 scoreless innings in a row. Only allowed 19 hits and 4 BBs in the streak.

Hershiser has the record with 59.0 and Drysdale had 58.0

KSU Wildcat Carlos Torres picked up the win for NY!

The Cards probably mumped up their rotation for the week. Martinez was scheduled to start on Tuesday but had to pitch 4 innings. They may have to move up Lynn, who is scheduled to start vs KC on Thursday.

For a really affordable price, too. That's a steal for the Astros.
