Question about Credit Checks
« on: April 04, 2014, 02:51:15 PM »
Where is a good place to go about checking your credit?  I have heard a million different ways, reasons not to do it, etc....So I figured I may as well come the good ol' reliable gE crowd to get some information.  Don't fail me now.

call the bank you have a credit card with and ask.

You are entitled to 1 free credit report per year from each of the three credit reporting agencies.

It doesn't include your FICO credit score though, which seems like BS to me.

Doesn't CreditKarma advertise giving you your score without asking for a CC?  One of them is supposed to do that but there has to be a $$ scam in there somewhere.

I think you get bombarded with "offers from partners who share our vision of consumer empowerment and value the opportunity to connect with well matched consumers"...but that may be worth it to get a free score?

creditkarma is very good and you do not enter CC information or get bombarded with anything.

yeah, credit karma and credit sesame are both good.  the scores tend to differ a bit between each site, but i don't think either is a true fico score

exactly, it just keeps you in the ballpark on scores but lets you know any new statuses on accounts.

that is correct. when you get approved for a CC, when they send you your packet of stuff, it includes your actual FICO score. iirc my FICO score was way higher than my score on creditkarma

just looked and credit karma looks like it uses your transunion score.  mine has also typically been lower than my actual fico and whatever credit sesame uses (in-house calc prolly)

Credit karma uses a completely different calculation created by transunion but its not your transunion score.

i've made the mistake of taking advantage of those 0% cash advance checks some banks send you.  doing ok on the arbitrage, but i didn't realize how those sums would impact my churning.  i don't think i'll keep going after the current loans term out.
