How else do you explain this?

The charter flight back from STL to MHK is called "casino express"

Maybe he cashed in some reward points?

How much would you have to gamble to earn that many points?

Do we ignore his gambling problem as long as he keeps building nice things for us?

What if he takes the vaniers money to vegas and lets it ride on black?
