nope, couldn't find 3 other dudes to split a $300 hotel with.

Meh. I know a good hotel I could have stayed at by the casino for $100. I thought about jumping the gun, but it seemed like a lot of work. Getting hotel van rides to the amtrak/metro (whatever the eff it's called) seems annoying and I would rather spend my 4 days off sitting on my ass and boozing it up from my man cave.

Amtrak to STL is $38.  Hello boozefest.

have heard that since they share tracks with freight (who have right of way), that pretty often this trip can take 12+ hours

Recently, a hipster colleague has been using Amtrak and he's had a good experience.    (Could be his hipster propaganda, though.)

my one trip on an amtrak to chicago involved a two hour delay to reattach a sewage line that had been knocked off the bottom of the train. the entire train smelled like raw sewage for the remainder of the trip.

i'm sure it goes fine as well.  just delay's are more common and longer than flying.  never use it for time sensitive stuff is what i'm saying.

i dunno, i read about it a few years ago, just something to keep in mind.
