Remember kids, this is the same fanbase that flocked to a football stadium in a manner that would have ranked as the 3rd largest crowd of the previous football season in order to hear an announcement on a basketball coach staying or leaving.   

Hand to the big guy upstairs, I was visiting a large contingent of the ku side of the family on that evening and prior to the announcement it was extremely uncomfortable as they were literally breaking down in tears.   After the announcement they actually cried tears of joy. 

I love'm but it was, in a word, pathetic.
