They were just FWB, but as often happens, Russia thought they had something more, and now that Ukraine wants to cut them off, it's gone abusive.

Unless they are Russian coworkers (my condolences if they are), they will probably agree with you that the Ukraine is its own country with its own flag and olympic team and everything.
