the bizarre thing is really that football complex and how little thought seems to have gone into planning it. it was like well we gotta build something so maybe we just plop it down over here. yeah, don't care where the entry or exit are or colors you use on it. just build something over in that area. i never knew how bizarre it really looked.

A lot of thought went into planning it and making sure it didn't obstruct the view of the stadium from the hill.  The color is a little off compared to the rest of the stadium, but Memorial's facade is probably going to change pretty soon anyways.  The inside of the complex is incredible and the view from Weis' office opens up right onto the field.  It's a really nice facility, imo.

1)tell me more about the tunnel thing. i don't understand but it sounds cool.
2)the inside of it does sound and look pretty good. but the outside and the angle and the colors from top to bottom along w/ clipart guy are just so bad. just so, so bad. is there a chance they'll explode it like we are doing w/ the vanier complex that we just redid but also didn't do it very well or is ku stuck w/ it?
3)does ku practice on the field or the practice fields? both?

also, they apparently purposefully made it not match in any way. so look at that complex and i guess you have a good idea of what the new stadium will look like. red and yellow. also, those halls are so far away i mean what in the world? it would be like matching vanier to edwards hall.

Stone used in the construction is meant to match that of Strong, Bailey and Dyche halls. In short, the complex looks nothing like Memorial Stadium's facade."That was on purpose. We didn't want to match that," Corman said.

Dennis Domer, associate dean emeritus of Kansas University's architecture department and an outspoken opponent of the construction of the Oread Hotel, said the complex is better than he expected."Just from driving by and looking at it, you know, it's not a great building, but it has some attractive qualities there that I would have to look at more carefully," he said.

What I've heard:

KU has looked at Washington and Minnesota's recent stadium projects and is preparing to do something similar with Memorial.  The new stadium will include a tunnel system connecting the hill and the football complex, with a party porch and/or a walkway just above it.  They are possibly looking to build an indoor practice facility onto the new stadium as well.  I would expect them to tear down the entire east side and build a new facade, similar to what K-State did with the WSC.

Like the rest of you, I can't wait to finally see the renderings.

 :ksu:

I mean, hasn't this been "in the works" for years and years?  To use rd's analogy eventually you have to ask someone to show you how to put weights on the squat rack and start doing it.  Taking about how huge your calves will be doesn't make them huge.

I'm having difficulty visualizing how tearing out and replacing the east side will help that stadium at all. You still end up with a track, and a bowl that's too big and too far away from the field because of the track, but now the stadium would be mismatched, too.

Best option would be to demolish the entire stadium and start over, but I guess that won't happen. Next best option would be to excavate and lower the entire field by 10-15 feet, eliminate the track, extend seating down to the new field level, demolish the existing west side grandstands and press box and replace with a new press box. It could even be done is phases as long as you close off the west side grandstands to offset for all the new lower-level seating.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

stadium reno's can be fun, even if it is KU. I'm bored at work plus TSC, so..

I think they should do like Daris said, keep the top west side half and press box, but I think they should design the rest of the stadium similar to SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

but, wrap the lower level all the way around the south side with the super secrety amazing tunnel system to the hill and locker rooms like Beems said. SMU is at 32k seating, but wrapped all the way around and a little more sprawled out would get them around 40-45k, which would be about right for them. KIND OF like this.

making it as nice as SMU's stadium is probably way out of the question for them. I'm just saying the design, they can build the same basic structure out of concrete w/ clip art all over it.

The bowl is already too shallow. No way to get seats closer to the field without lowering the field or building over all the existing seats.

Most SKC fans are KU fans anyway. Two birds with one stone.

that cost a quarter billion dollars and as much as it would be cool for ku to do, there's not a chance in hell that ku can afford to do that.  why?  because it has to be done all at once.  UW isn't a phased approach.

the appropriate way for ku to do theirs is to bulldoze the east side student section in phase 1 rebuild closer to the location where the new field is and reconstruct.  then tear out the south bowl in phase 2 and rebuild a squared off endzone like at BSS bringing it north and west, again pulling out the distance b/w the fans and the field.  then phase 3 is to tear out the pos press box and build the new level of suites/press box on top of the current west side.  i wouldn't worry about the outside of the west facade, it's kind of covered by the hill (not THE HILL) on the west side of the stadium.  my rough math tells me the price tag on what i've described is $200M and can be done in a period of 4-5 years.  that would get them to a pretty respectable place

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

1.  Imagine if Minnesota's stadium was relocated to KU, and they created a tunnel system connecting the semi-open end to the hill/football complex:

2.  The angle of the football complex is designed specifically so that it doesn't obstruct the view of the stadium and the walk from the Campanile during graduation.  KU alums were involved and did not want to imitate K-State's lifeless stadium with something like Vanier.  A large portion of KU's complex is underground and built into the side of the hill, which maximizes space.  The clip art is stupid and the color of the facade is off, so I hope they fix those two things.  The angle is not a concern, though.

3.  Both.  Weis has hinted that they might build an indoor practice facility next to the upgraded stadium as well.

Sometime before KU gets rid of its garbage track and overall garbage stadium.  We're only doing a 50+ million renovation on that, as announced like a month or two ago and leaked like 6ish? months ago.

and this inside the stadium:
