ku stadium
« on: February 20, 2014, 03:11:42 PM »
obviously the worst in the big12 and maybe the worst in the country. that's not goemawing. it's something that everyone regardless of school they cheer for would agree on. it seems like they are at least discussing maybe doing something to it possibly. fun!

i just look at this thing though and i'm not even sure what you would do here. it's a memorial stadium so i guess that probably prevents them just buildozing and starting from scratch which seems like the best option. with that said- if it's me, i would probably leave the upper half w/ that weird pressbox building and half of the bowl. i would tear down the right (east) side of the bowl though and the whole east side. then i would round the bowl a little tighter and build something nicer than the current box thing they have on the west side. make the east side the nice side and where people really want to be. tear down that current big screen on stilts and enclose the stadium on the left with maybe eight rows of seats or whatever close to the field. the absolute worst thing is that yellow anderson building or whatever that is built off to the upper left part ant that weird angle and covered w/ the clip art people. thoughts?

RD, I think Memorial needs to stay as is. As science progresses and we hurtle towards a new and exciting future, it's safe to assume that someday humanity will have giants walk the earth. These giants will need entertainment, and the visiting stands framework is a perfect Connect Four board for them. Just rip out the upper half of the visiting stands to create the board, and you have classic giant entertainment AND a way to create badly needed KU football sellouts. The giants can dunk their Connect Four pieces in Potter Lake to rinse off the stench of urine too. Win-win!

Never noticed that shot put area in the corner, very small timey/high schoolish.

That would the second thing I change after tearing out that godawful track.

i mean, you just tear down everything from the middle of the bowl over to the entire east side. then you round the bowl tighter. get rid of all the track stuff. bring the east side closer to the west. make the east side desireable kind of like we did when we built our new east side ten years ago. close the stadium but not w/ a lot of rows. get rid of the chain link fence. that's gotta be the plan, right?

Why does their current press box look so much like our really old one that we blew up and threw in the trash?

It would definitely have to be done in phases.

Phase 1:  Bullzdone east (non pressbox) side, bulldoze north side (family fun zone), and remove track.  Move the field closer to the west stands, rebuild east side with more suites (not SEATS!).  Rebuild the north size but closer to the north endzone.
Phase 2:  Tear down west side, rebuild with more suites and amenities.  Remove trailer in south endzone.  Extend new west side and integrate it with the football complex.  Put a new facade on the football complex in order to blend in with the rest of the stadium.
Phase 3:  Add new video/ribbon boards to new press boxes, north side, and south side.  New south size scoreboard needs to be set in the corner (similar to TCU) in order to preserve the setting of the hill.

One of my favorite things KU fans do is try to argue that Memorial Stadium is better than BSFS.

They should make it as close to BSFS as they could afford and cover the track with endzone of death carpet.

I once blew clove smoke in a guy's face that cut in front of me in the line to KJ's.

What I've heard:

KU has looked at Washington and Minnesota's recent stadium projects and is preparing to do something similar with Memorial.  The new stadium will include a tunnel system connecting the hill and the football complex, with a party porch and/or a walkway just above it.  They are possibly looking to build an indoor practice facility onto the new stadium as well.  I would expect them to tear down the entire east side and build a new facade, similar to what K-State did with the WSC.

Like the rest of you, I can't wait to finally see the renderings.

the bizarre thing is really that football complex and how little thought seems to have gone into planning it. it was like well we gotta build something so maybe we just plop it down over here. yeah, don't care where the entry or exit are or colors you use on it. just build something over in that area. i never knew how bizarre it really looked.

what do you mean "tunnel system connecting the hill and the football complex?" like you are up at the top of the hill and can go underground and end up inside the fball stadium?

The red parts of the roof are especially strange. They probably should have just made the outside edge of the roof all red so that it would match the football field in aerial photography.

A lot of thought went into planning it and making sure it didn't obstruct the view of the stadium from the hill.  The color is a little off compared to the rest of the stadium, but Memorial's facade is probably going to change pretty soon anyways.  The inside of the complex is incredible and the view from Weis' office opens up right onto the field.  It's a really nice facility, imo.

The red roofs are featured all over KU's campus.  The aerial photos match up pretty well actually:
