Jevon Thomas
« on: January 26, 2014, 11:43:17 AM »
For the high BBIQers on this board.  What are realistic expectations for him going forward?

TV broadcast yesterday highlighted his shooting pct struggles both from the floor and the FT line.  Noted late in close games at this point we can't afford to have him on the floor (opponent foul target due to poor FT%).

How much longer does the "...couldn't practice until Dec, only played nine games..." preface every discussion of his play?

The more shooters we have on the floor the better Jevon will be.  He is a classic pass first player that I hope will be the right compliment to Foster and possibly the canuck in addition to more size inside with Hurt and Bolden.

If you recall, Angel only shot 58% from the FT line in conference games only his freshman year and then made a jump to 83% as soph.

Angel was going to be the best pg ever at KSU if he had stayed and I think Jevon can do a lot of the same things. It is still early but I don't see the creative playmaking we did from Angel as a freshman and he may not become a mid 30s shooter from 3.  That said, I believe he can still be an all league type player at his position and he needs as many minutes a possible.

Do you mean this season or future seasons? I agree with the analyst saying that he can't be on the floor late in close games, and that will likely hold all season. I'm not at all worried about his shooting beyond this season. If he is effective in getting shots for his teammates and getting to the basket he won't need to be any better than a serviceable shooter, low 30s. He'll obviously get better at the line

He can't be on the floor in a close game when the Cats have a lead. Probably should be when the team is behind. I think his overall game will continue to improve incrementally throughout conference play as he gets a clearer idea of his responsibilities on both sides of the floor.
His free throw shooting woes and defensive skills would seem to call for offensive-defense subbing pattern.

This is the area where not playing early hurts him the most. He's had no transition from the size he saw in high school to what he sees in conference play & he doesn't see it in practice either.

If I were behind late I'd foul him to put him on the line.

If he develops a floater watch out. Most hyper player we've ever had. Appears to only have one speed.

Gonna need to, and I'm sure he will, fix that

Yeah I think he will. When he does he'll probably start making some free throws too. Right now he appears to be running on pure adrenaline at times.

I think he isn't as bad a free throw shooter as his percentage indicates.  He'll finish above 50% for the season.

Jevon is a nice player but his shooting is ridiculously bad. He's like a juco Rondo.

Yeah, obviously, just be nice if he was any kind of jump shooting threat right now. Even shooting the 3 like freshman Angel would make us so much more dangerous.

The biggest concern is free throws because he's reached a point where he can't be in at the end in close games.

In time, I think this, too, will pass. He'll be OK at the line.
