It's laughable when people make claims about who is and who is not a good musician based on guitar shredding ability.

Johnny was in an era where you were expected to sing many songs by other writers, as well as your own. He was a brilliant song writer, I'm not surprised "Metalhead" doesn't understand this.

the cult of originality in pop/modern music annoys me.  the chances of someone writing a better song than anything that's already been written in very low.  just perform the best ones that've already been done.  classical music understands this.

Did Eric Kynard consider "the odds" before he lept into our hearts?  eff no.  He worked hard and mastered his craft and metaled at the Olympics.  Odds schmods.

was this true in the 1970s? 1980s? 1990s? when did this become true?

I agree and disagree. Most people won't write a better song. But everyone should at least give it a go. And I think classical music worshiping 400 year old dead guys really holds it back. Symphonies could have been blowing our minds even more if people weren't so rough ridin' hung up on the past.

I also think Cash was overrated. Waylon was better, he just wasn't around to cover Nirvana or something.

he had to "revamp" his career on multiple occasions. in his last ditch effort he signed up for the "super group" the highwaymen, where he was essentially Waylon, Willie and Kris' "Chris Kirkpatrick" to their "JT, JC and Lance"

nobody puts metalhead in a corner.

FWIW, I like Johnny Cash. He is overrated but that doesn't mean that I think he's bad. He's got a fascinating story and is extremely popular for his actions on and off stage. He's was an entertainer, there is nothing wrong with that.

he's my favorite american. his life story was incredible. also, he is one of the truly great songwriters of american popular music.
"I started calling him John during the game, cause he was rocking it like No. 7 -- like Elway," Harper said."
