Hey, Cat Fans.

I am a casual runner who averages about a 9:30 pace, and have signed up for my first marathon in February. I'm mainly concerned with beating WM Bro's time (which I should do?) and beating Oprah's marathon time of 4:29 (which will be harder). The longest run I've done so far is a half.

Which marathon training program should I use? Right now I'm leaning toward Higdon's Novice 1, but that's mainly because it's the first search result in Google and I haven't seen any others. Any pro-tips on selecting the right training program? Running 3x per week instead of 4x is preferred, but if I have to do four, then I'll get jiggy with it.

I like Higdon plans. Get you across the line without killing yourself in training.

But may not get you across the line AND ahead of Oprah's time  :dunno:

Depends on the effort put forth by the previous poster. Personally, I'd hire a running coach if I wanted to crush a time goal.

Quite a few good running coaches out there.

15.5 today in 2:15. Maybe I'm doing this October marathon. Maybe. I felt pretty damned tired when I stopped running but now I feel pretty good except a little achy in knees. Still questioning how I'm going to do this for close to 4 hours.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

How were your splits today? Have you been consistent during the build at 8:45 pace or is it slowing over the distance?

Splits:
- mile 1: 9:09
- mile 2: 8:57
- mile 3: 8:51
- mile 4: 8:48
- mile 5: 8:39
- mile 6: 8:26
- mile 7: 8:24
- mile 8: 8:37
- mile 9: 8:38
- mile 10: 8:43
- mile 11: 8:42
- mile 12: 8:48
- mile 13: 8:41
- mile 14: 8:56 (going uphill most of this)
- mile 15: 8:45

I haven't been totally consistent over the build. I run shorter distances during the week - 3-5 miles - in the low 8s. I think I ran the 10-11 mile range in closer to 8:30.

Might struggle a bit too crack four hours. You're losing 0:15 every five miles. If you hold 9:00 on your twenty miler, you'll have a chance.

Days are getting shorter.  Street lights suck in my area. Any recommendations for running lights?  Headlamp or flashlight or knuckle lights or something else?

Man, I'd think running with a headlamp on would suck, unless it had the over-the-head strap I would bet it'd fall down a lot.  I like my Petzel Tikka+ better than any other headlamps I've had (lightweight, bright, and has red light option and you have to hold down button to turn on <-- no accidentally turning it on and burning out batteries).  But it doesn't have over the head strap.  I think rechargeable would be a good feature for more consistent use like running.

If you're a premium product kind of guy I've heard that ZebraLights are awesome but they've been too spendy for me so far.

I ran with my dogs yesterday because I hurt my shoulder so I can't lift. My god, running is hard when you don't do it often

Ya, my headlamp is cheap and bulky.  Def not running with it.  Black Diamond Sprinter gets good reviews and has the top strap and is rechargeable, so might try that.  There are a few flashlights angled for running, Nathan hand torch is one, but I don't really want to carry anything.  Will check on zebra lights.

Big fan of knuckle lights. Strong hate for headlamps.

See things quite well. I love using them. Great for trail running. You don't have to whip your head around to illuminate things. Just move your hands. Plus no annoying bounce from the headlamp.

We do a good but of late night races/runs. Both of us use a headlamp with the overy the head strap. As do most people I've run most races with. JusT make sure you get a quality one, and check for the red LED option with it. The red is nice for pre-race light that doesn't blind everyone else.

Yeah, all of my really old friends are still out there pokemoning too.

Sorry, that was mean. Self-exiled from running and accompanying endorphins.
