Training for a half m in October. Ran a little over 8 miles this morning - the farthest since high school. My goal is to finish under 2 hours and I think I might be able to do it! Ran the 8 today at 8.5 minute mile pace.

Also regarding knees, I was experiencing some pain in my left knee and got online to research knee braces. All the running sites said I don't need a brace - I need to fix something with my shoes or stride. So this morning I was running and the pain popped up. I started thinking about my stride. My iphone was in my right pocket because I hate the arm bands. I thought, could that really be it? I pulled the iphone out of my pocket and carried it the rest of the way. The pain was gone a mile later.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

Also a question: do you guys wear headphones during races? I've never done that before, but I'm worried the length of the half m is just going to be unbearable without music.

i always wear headphones when i'm by myself. but, today ms. blast had her phone and played music on the phone speaker right next to me. i kind of liked not having to deal with head phones and my phone. but you're right, 13 miles would be a long way to go with no music.

I am headed to Las Vegas for the Rock n Roll in November.  I go every year.  Last year instead of music, because I usually run alone, I listened to stand up comedy.  It made the 1/2 very bearable and entertaining.  I would recommend it.
The RnR always has live music along the Vegas strip, so some great music is available at differn t spots along the route.
Good luck with your run.  I am headed out for a short run now.  Do you use a training calendar, or just run on your own plan?

I'm on a training schedule a friend gave me. It only has one progressively longer run, plus a short run, on the weekend. During the week, I only run three shorter runs. So it's not too bad. And I've built up to over 8 miles at decent pace without hurting myself, so I guess it works.

The friend who got me started doing the longer races told me that if you can do eight or nine miles comfortably, then the half is really manageable.  And by comfortably I don't mean it doesn't wear you out, just that you can complete it running continuously.
I think you'll be fine.  I'm no expert, but I have done several runs.  I no longer race, just run my pace and finish the run.

What kind of knee pain?  Shoes are very important with increased mileage so it is certainly worth the time and $ to get the right fit.  Also a shorter, faster stride has been shown to reduce chronic running injuries.  Target 175-180 steps per minute.

For me, I almost always have some knee pain after about six or eight miles.  When I do the half I always wear a brace at my ankle until I need to pull it up for support.

Below the kneecap, across the front. I'm wearing Saucony Hurricanes, which is the model recommended to me years ago for pronation. I should go back to a running specialist shop and see if it's still a good fit.

I'm taking ibuprofen before each run for swelling, but I should probably get a brace for long runs.

Runner's knee. You're increasing mileage too fast. Need to build the supporting muscles. Are you lifting weights or doing body weight exercises?

I'm not doing anything other than running and some situps, pushups, etc. No weight training. I went to the running store today and they looked at my stride. Mild pronation but nothing seriously out of whack. They recommended the Saucony Hurricane or Brooks Adrenaline. The Hurricanes are what I already wear. My current pair is about 5 months old but I've only been using them for about 3 months. I went ahead and bought a new pair of Hurricanes that I'll start using just a few runs before the race. I want them nice and cushy for the race.

Nice write up on runner's knee.

Kinesiology tape will help relieve the pain while you continue to exercise.

Ditch the antiinflammatory meds. Definitely not good to take before each run.

Damn. I thought I was helping myself with the Ibuprofen, but that article makes sense. This week I'm reducing my mileage anyway pursuant to the training schedule. I ran 4 miles tonight, and I wore knee bands. The bands seem to help and they didn't slip as much as I thought they would. I'm not sure if I actually have runner's knee. I was told as early as my high school x-country days that I have Osgood-Schlatter "disease" so I wonder if it's a byproduct or continuation of that.

Since your are beyond adolescence, O-S shouldn't be a concern. Probably just runner's knee. Most of us go through it when building mileage the first time.  I use  kt or rocktape when I get a niggly like that. Pretty amazing stuff.

CatsNShocks, sounds like you're living a dream weekend.

Yeah, great weekend. Color run was just a fun run. Ran with family, stopped to take pics, etc. Plaza 10k, like was mentioned, was a great race! Perfect weather, great morning, awesome route. Will definitely be doing that one again. Finishing up the Heartland 30k this Sunday with the Broadway Bridge 10k.

Headed out for a trail race this morning. Was supposed to be 5 1/2 miles but they cut it down to 4.6. We'll see how it goes. First actual "race" since surgery, and I'll be running with cDub-gf who has an ailing IT band.

This is already looking fun.  :D

cDub, how did it go?  I just finished a short run. It always feels great after the initial exhaustion. I recommend jogging and running to anyone who can. Even a mile is a great bit of exercise.

It was nice weather,  gorgeous scenery, but the gf got a mile and a half in and couldn't do much running at all. She was in some pretty serious pain, so most of it was a brisk walk through some serious trails.

I felt pretty good for my first time doing much distance after surgery, we'll see how I feel tomorrow. We have a 5K in the morning, lol.

Good exercise and good time spent with her though. And free kettle corn after!

Sounds like a good day anyway.  I'm glad you did that.  I'd like to find a running/jogging partner for some short runs, but haven't had much luck.  I think I'm too slow for most.
