Usually FANw just finds something she likes and often buys it herself. I do the same. Works.

my how romantic

I suppose.

For us we just thought why not make it easy to get what we really want and not make it some guessing game. The surprise gift part is more for the kids.

Same. We usually sit together and browse Amazon while boozing it up and then high five when we pull the trigger on our respective irresponsible purchases. This year, I got carried away and also bought my dad a pair of night vision goggles.

This is fantastic.

Also, Christmas or birthday gifts simply need to be in the vicinity of said event. For example, my Christmas gift this year was my Galaxy Note 3 which I got in mid October.

gifts are pretty stupid for people with disposable income (so not for kids, unless the kids are spoiled).

Today is my brother's 40th birthday.  He lives in another state/city so I wo'nt get to see him.  But my wife knows the restaurant they're going for dinner and she called ahead and is sending the table a bottle of wine.  Holy crap my wife is so thoughtful and awesome.  So like that just disproved your theory.

I enjoy buying people things they could afford but would probably never spend the money on.

If you are buying the gift using a bank account (or miles earning credit card) that you share with the receiver of the gift, then yes.

Thinking about buying my wife a bath tub. Thoughts?

My husband just called to tell me he bought himself his presents from me and already got them wrapped. I am pissed. We did not discuss this. There will be a fight later.
