Didn't they run the Wishbone offense or something like that?  Wishbone?  The eff is that anyway?

They were really good, but the invention of the forward pass just decimated their program

That and airports.  Options of easily getting recruits to a non shitty school really changed them.

I was just asking my dad how they were good way back then. He said that they could have players who were not qualified to attend college play for their team. Partially qualified for college or something. He said that they had entire rosters full of guys who could only go there because they would let them in anyway. Maybe they could go back to doing that?

I have friends that tell me they were good in the sixties or fifties or something, back before there was a real NC game. I guess they claim to have "won" a couple of championships but they never actually won any per say , they just kinda declared themselves Champions and no one cared enough to dispute it.

It's the whole partial qualifier issue.  Before the Big 12, Nebraska had multiple players who were not qualified to attend college.  Big 8 was run half by OU and half by Nebraska, and let them have their way.

Once Texas joined, they demanded that partial qualifiers be removed.  Thus, Texas brought up Prop 48 (I believe, can't remember the real name), and it was passed 11-1.  Texas made a point to poke at Nebraska about Prop 48.  I think that's what planted the seed of the Nebraska hatred for Texas/

Snyder commented: "those were some awful good players that Nebraska used to be able to get."

My dad tells me that Nebraska was kind of good when he was younger. They have been pretty shitty for as far back as I remember. Remember when they were in our conference? They stunk. Now they stink in the Big 10 and it's a much more sucky conference than ours. I don't remember them ever winning our conference in the modern era and they haven't been close to winning the garbage Big 10. Just seem like a team that the game has passed by. Maybe facing a team like ours (modern football, advanced playbook, tough, disciplined, etc.) will give them something to blueprint their own program by?
Martinez may be healthy for the game of course then again, he probably only needs one foot to put up 200 on KSU again.

My dad is a big NU fan, and he even played football at Iowa State... apparently, they sure were something back in the day.

This, like Sewanee, the University of the South, who had to leave their original conference (SEC) when the game passed the by, too.

The worst part about potentially playing them is that the BWW Bowl is a big deal for their school. Let's face it, our guys won't be up for this game. Our players are used to playing in BCS Bowls and Cotton Bowls. I bet Bill doesn't even do bowl prep. Probably just sits the seniors aside and starts scheming for next season. Meanwhile, this is Pelini's super bowl.

Mom just reminded me that our neighbor knows a lot about ancient history.  If I see him in his yard I will cruise over and ask him if Nebraska was ever relevant in football.

Pretty easy to be good when there are only 7 other teams

I went to the  library and researched the topic. Apparently, they were good until Michael Bishop put an end to it all.

Little more research.. They had a guy named Lord and apparently Ksu killed him and he along with Nebraska has never been resurrected.

my neighbor said yes, they did use to be relevant and confirmed they were good because they took many players who couldn't go to school anywhere else and it was pretty much a joke.

I saw NU got one vote in the final coaches poll though. Looks like Bo Pelini voted them #25. Good for them!

I've got an uncle who is a prof at UNL. He used to tell me about the glory days all the time when I was growing up. I thought he was just making it up. Felt kinda bad about it, honestly.

Saw this thread so I called my Dad and asked him to verify the contents. He said that Nebraska not only was good back then, but Wichita St had a football team too. The olden days were weird.
