KC, and the southerners aren't the only hurdle.  Family and a few really close friends are the big one.

The more I think about it, the more I think Michigancat is right...if you don't like your job, any place could be bad, and anyplace could be good if you like your job.

or San Francisco. I routinely look for jobs in the Bay Area.

The past 6 years I have lived in Overland Park KS, Newport RI, Athens GA, Virginia Beach VA, and San Diego CA. Basically, every type of geographical location and city type minus the Pacific Northwest (though I lived in Seattle when I was a kid).

I have to say the best place was Athens, GA. It is home to UGA and very similar to Manhattan.  Great people.Great college town. San Diego is a very close second because of the amazing weather.

All my family is in KS so it would be nice to come home. I do think if I could have the same gig and make the same amount of money I would go back to KC. However,  if I have a wife and kids some day I would love to go down South. When I retire, SD isn't a bad place to be.

I am thinking more and more about Detroit.

Seems like a rare opportunity to buy low in a large American city.

would be furious if ever forced to move from KC.

Saw a thing saying if you relocate a biz w like 40 workers or more, city gives you a lake house and boat dock on the lake for free.

Right now, some one with some means could buy a crazy amt of property for very little.  Detroit is primed for a future renaissance.

I have no idea why all the artists in the Bay Area complaining about rent prices don't move to Detroit.

(Actually, I do know why, but they would probably never admit it.)

It has a bunch of cheap manuf square footage, lots of avail transportation, and soon to be low wage workers trained in droves who are trained in manuf, with a city that will soon do a lot of desperate things to lure business.  The short term future will probably suck, but they have building blocks to do some great stuff with the right leadership.

I've actually thought about this a lot.  I can't really move at this point because of my business, but I can work remotely about 95% of the time. kansas is very appealing to me for a lot of different reasons.  I can golf when it's warm, I can hunt when it's cold, and I get to experience all of the seasons.  I could do without temps below 20 degrees or above 95, but that sort of comes with the territory.  I'm right in the middle of the country, so I'm a 3+ hour flight away from anywhere in the nation.  cost of living is cheap and I'm close to family.  all things considered, I guess I'd probably rather be in manhattan than lawrence, but lawrence is still a really great place and has benefits that manhattan doesn't.  also I'm only about an hour drive away, so that's no big deal.  really the only other place in the country that offers everything I would want would be the pacific northwest. great area for outdoors activities without the 100 degree summer days and the sub zero winter nights.

1. Bay Area - My best friend and his wife (who just so happens to be my cousin) just moved there, so that'd be a great connection to have. Love the weather. Love the Warriors. Love the idea of recycling and being organic/all natural and what not. Mrs. Stevesie and I went there for our honeymoon and have both talked about moving there (non-seriously) quite a bit.

2. Flagstaff - I've enjoyed my time in this city. Has a college town feel but all the advantages of a big city. You're only 30 minutes to an hour away from ski slopes, and that would be a huge advantage for me. K-State seems to go to Arizona for bowls every few years so that'd be an easy trip for me and a fun time to hang out with friends.

3. Nashville - 10 hours from here, so not too far from family if we wanted to come back from extended holidays. Would love to be able to do something, ANYTHING in that music scene. And the mountains there are gorgeous. I was surprised at the lack of sountherness, at least within the city limits.

At the end of the day, I doubt I'll ever leave MHK though. I can't get over the convenience of going to K-State games. I think NBAF is going to make this town one of the best in the nation, and I'm very excited to see how that plays out. Obviously I believe it's one of the best towns in the nation already, but I think after NBAF has been established for a while even unbiased observers will consent to that. And there's few places that can support all the locally owned businesses that Manhattan does, which is a pretty big deal for me. So yeah, go cats.

We just took a trip to Atlanta so we're tapped out on vacation time. Sounds amazing though.
