Tressel was a pretty unique case. He's the only coach I can think of that successfully made the jump directly from FCS to a high major. I guess the Georgia Tech guy, sorta. And Harbaugh. Hmm, so maybe I need to do a little more thinking about this.

Chip Kelly kind of did.  He was only at Oregon for a couple of years, and before then, his entire career was spent as a position coach and coordinator in FCS.
