OT history: where were you when you found out Kennedy was shot?
« on: November 20, 2013, 10:50:12 AM »
I was in 6th grade in Hutchinson at Morgan Grade School. Lunch recess and word spread among the kids when we were outside. When we went inside the school played the radio over those boxy speakers on the wall. Some of the girls were crying because of the Kennedy kids. At age 11 I truly didn't grasp the gravity of the moment but I knew it was historic. I was raised in a family and time that had serious reservations about a Catholic president which seems very odd now but it was a different time then. We went to see my grandparents in Larned that weekend and when we got there my grandpa who was a big jokester told us Oswald had been shot. My dad was annoyed because he thought grandpa was telling a bad joke. My dad took pictures of scenes on our black and white tv screen during the funeral because he said we would never see anything like that again. For the younger folks on here it's like talking about Pearl Harbor to me. It's just part of history to them

Taking pictures of the tv is pretty cool/funny/telling of the times.  Probably inconceivable back then that this footage would be replayed millions of times and saved forever and even improved.

Times have changed.

PS:  My parents were still in high school when this happened so I don't have a story.  My grandma also hated Catholics FWIW.

Thread title is wrong.  He died in a plane crash.  Terribly tragic.

Since I know it will invariably come up, I was not alive when JFK was shot.

Thank you for your time and EMAW.

I will dutifully have to report that I was alive when:  Nixon resigned, when someone took a shot at Gerald Ford, when what's her name pointed a gun at Jimmy Carter, when Ronnie was shot. I was siting in a classroom at K-State cheating off a test with 3 K-State baseball players when the Challenger blew up . . .

I was still at home working late.  My wife (Mrs. Thompson) had left before that to go teach her second grade class.
