K-State Player Per 100s (FINAL) and Team ADV Stats
« on: November 17, 2013, 10:13:04 PM »
Only 3 games in, so there will be weird numbers, but its always worth looking at some per 100s.

Last year's per 100s for comparisons: http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=25815.msg718369#msg718369

Offensive 3% is the real bad news here given the previous stats you and Bread have given about what it takes historically for oscar's teams to succeed.

Is this the worst offense ever at KSU?

Not having really followed this adv stat stuff until last season or two, what is the rank range that we normally play in?  50's?  30's?  I know we have had yrs where we are top rebounders or other individual stats, but I assume that level of production have been individual outliers

Statsheet's ADV stats history goes back to 96-97, the three worst offensive PPP in that span:

96-97: .903
00-01: .919
99-00: .945

Wow.  Shane and Will shooting a combined 9/43 from 3pt%.

20.9%.  And they're number 1 (Will) and 3 (Shane) in minutes played.  That's just...well, that explains a lot.

The numbers are clear on Marcus Foster; he can flat out score, especially from 3. You don't get to nearly 29 points per 100 by accident this early in your career. The key for Marcus is getting more efficient, especially from 2s, since he's down with Will in 2 PT shooting. I'd also like to see him get his FTR up, but that's tough when you shoot it as much as he does (he is 2nd on the team in FT attempts). His 3PT numbers are clear though that he can shoot, and its reasonable to conclude that he will get better at the others stuff throughout his career. So maybe the NBA talk and breaking Pullen's numbers are premature, but the numbers show he's got the potential to be in the conversation.

Other notes:

Gip is a huge key for this team and is becoming an efficient scorer from the post.

Johnson has been a rebounding beast.

Will like never turns the ball over.

Westicles is great on the boards and a FT rate stud.

Shane is doing some nice things with assists and defensive boards, his key is getting 3PT shooting respectable to be a more efficient scorer.

Nigel Johnson has been a nice surprise, but unfortunately he's probably the most likely to really lose some minutes with Thomas coming back.

TY.

Per 100s and ADV stats just give a fan a much better picture of what is actually happening in games and with player stats. I wish more fans understood them so we could have more intelligent basketball conversations, but gE is the place to be if you want to really talk K-State basketball.

Notable:

The Cats' 2nd half defense needs to get better. Teams are shooting a lot better, turning it over a lot less, and evening up oboards against K-State at a high clip in the 2nd half of games. K-State is picking up the offense themselves in the 2nd half, but not at the clip of our opponents.

This doesn't look like a >50% eFG team, so the Cats need to continue to drop their TO% while maintaining a Weber/Lowry key of forcing TOs at a high rate. I'm happy to see the OR% advantage and the Cats will have to maintain that to be a .500+ team in the league.

The fun of finishing the football season with a BWW Bowl win can't stop my obsession with K-State basketball stats, so here are your weekly updated per 100s:

Notable:

I was reminded when I added Jevon that I failed to adjust the formulas (and Gip's numbers) for missing the first 2 games (and their possessions) of the year with his concussion or whatever. The adjusted numbers show that he is actually our most efficient scorer and a better rebounder than than previous charts were giving him credit for, my apologies for the computation errors.

Its one game, but Jevon's assist/TO/steals!

Shane and Nigel with huge 3PT improvements with one really good game. That's a trend this team needs to continue to approach the 35/35 oscar 3PT shooting ideal.

DJamer continues to be a rebounding machine. (And sys continues to fail to comment on a player that he is on record for saying completely sucks.)

The frosh (and really oscar's recruiting quintent of DJamer, Foster, Westicles, Johnson, and now Thomas) continues to look solid. Granted, its still very early in their careers.
