How do you guys enjoy games when you run off numbers every week? Honest question? I love the insight, but it feels like it takes away the mystery of the next game.

That's the beauty of it; you can't predict sports. _FAN is the smartest sports fan I know, and kenpom is probably one of the smartest sports guys in the world, and no matter what evidence they have laid out before them it's still not science. So when Boston College wins at Syracuse, it seems like it would be way more fun for stats people than it would be for the average non-BC sports fan.

It's way more predictive than basketball stats.

you either don't know what science is, or don't understand how predictive statistical analysis of basketball can be.

could be both

It's funny that the Christian in this thread is putting more faith into science than the atheists.

It seems circular to assert an abstract "mean" that they are regressing to.  We don't have the luxury of large numbers.

Can you imagine what Syracuse's record would be if they played this season 1000 times?

I don't think people get this.  Stochastic isn't just a river in Egypt.

Of course you can't predict it, that's what makes it fun. I certainly don't like stats because they tell you exactly what's going to happen in any game. I like stats because they give you a really good glimpse of what your team actually does (after it happens) and therefore give you a glimpse of what your team might do (before a game), but there are no guarantees.

I've always looked at the numbers more like lenses in glasses. They simply give you a better view of what you are watching. And in basketball the advanced stats/4 factors give you the best lens to look through, but not the only lens. They also give you a common language to discuss the game, both pre and post. They make watching the games and talking about the games more entertaining. JMHO.

I agree with everything you said. I guess what I'm saying is that, for instance, if we would have won Monday night, I would have been much more excited than before I started following and understanding stats. Being able to point to areas, mostly PPP I'd imagine, and understand just how well we played to win would have been very exciting. I don't really know how to word what I'm thinking. I think being able to celebrate how we is more fun than just celebrating a win.

Maybe a good, more specific answer, is that I find holding KU to as low of PPP as we did in Bramlage to be more fun than holding them to a low number of points.

Exactly.

Many times after games or even during a season fans say all kinds of stuff about why teams are "good" or "bad". Often, especially among fans who don't follow stats or that follow dumb stats, they are wrong.

For example, on road games we've talked a lot about how many easy shots K-State has missed. While there is truth to that, K-State actually shot the exact same percentage on 2PT shots at home as they did on the road so far this year. However, the Cats have shot 8% worse on 3PT shots and turn the ball over nearly 2% more, so those are much bigger problems than missing "easy" shots.

Today and Tommorrow, this is who we want to root against =

Ariz St lost last night to Oregon.  Ariz St was in the 8-9 seed range. They fell to 10-7 in Pac 12
3/5 Lville at SMU ....want SMU to lose. I think they are 9-10 seed(because of SOS at 165 and have only 4 top 100 wins), Lunardi has them a 8
3/6 Memphis at Cincy .... want Memphis to lose.   Memphis is in the 7-8 seed range
3/6 VCU at Richmond ... want VCU to lose.   VCU in the 7-8 seed range
3/6 Iowa at Mich St ..... want Iowa to lose.  Iowa in the 7-8 seed range

Can they sniff the tourney with a win over whisky? I figured their ship sailed a few weeks ago.
