Briles started one year before Rhoads, and had two 4-win seasons to start out.

3) Talk about "doing it the right way"
4) Go to a bowl game, no matter how shitty, once every 4 years

I can't find a link now, but I could swear that I have seen articles in the past claim that KSU was ineligible for a bowl that year due to the two 1-AA opponents and it wasn't just a matter of not getting an invite.  I know that would not apply today because you can use one win over a 1-AA to count toward eligibility.  But I don't know if that was the case back then.  Not having much luck doing a search on it now.

Was the 6 D1A wins rule in effect then?  It seems like going 4-3 in conference would of got us to a bowl

I don't believe 1AA wins counted toward bowl eligibility then. It was changed a year or two later that you could count a 1AA win every 3 or 4 years. Then when 12 game schedules came in the early 2000s, you could count one 1AA win yearly.
