"Oh, you can go in front of me ..."
« on: October 02, 2013, 01:48:53 PM »
When in the checkout line, if you have like 20 items, and the person behind you has two or three, will you let them in front of you? I have done it a few times, but not many, and try not to make a habit out of it.

If you say, "Yes, of course!" then where do you draw the line? What if 30 seconds later, another person with only one item gets in line behind you. Will you let them pass you, too?

no, they should use the self checkout line or the not very many items line. if you want to get in the line of plenty with not very much stuff you face the consequences

Never, haven't you seen that commercial where the guy does that and loses like $20,000.

It's a prank for a bank, but still

That's a good point steve dave makes. I never go anywhere unless there is a self checkout lane.

well, a smart poster would have noted that i had 20 items in my hypothetical, a clear indication that i'm already in the "not very many items line" (20 or less).

Trader Joe's doesn't have a self-checkout (but it does have a pretty good express lane.)

They should be in the self checkout line. If you have 20 items and are trying to run them all through the self checkout line, then you absolutely should let anyone with only a few items go ahead of you, regardless of how many people there are.

what if one of your 20 items is a TV?

If I've been standing there for more than a minute, that spot is locked down... if someone has quite a few less items than me and arrives either at the same time or shortly after I arrive i'll let them ahead of me, but its not a very big window... if you're already in the 20 or less line, it doesn't take that long for you to wait for my 20 items

Express Line  - no special treatment

Reg line - Go a head.  don't be an bad person, Rake.  It's not like they are going to want to small talk you up while their one item is being checked out.

which is worse? someone with 2 items not using the self-checkout, or someone with 50 items using the self-checkout?

Let's be careful who we demonize.

people who shop at trader joe's and evidently work at trader joe's want everyone to know how unique and unlike normal grocery shopping trader joe's is. i imagine in your situation they are really hoping you say "no" because they want your enjoyment of the product to basically be about them.

with this said, i have no problem shopping at trader joe's.

Let's be careful who we demonize.

It depends on the store and the person. If the store uses scales in the bagging area and everything stops when you have to remove a bag to make room for more groceries, then it's the guy with 50 items in the self-checkout. The person with 2 items not using the self checkout really wouldn't be a big deal, only in my experience it is always somebody who can't figure out how to work the self-checkout, and they also decide to pay with a check.

Their food is cheaper than safeway or HyVee or whatever. Even for the not weird stuff. Maybe you should go back and check it out.
