The top 4 out of 5, highest avg. household income counties in the United States.   All in suburban/metro D.C.

Federal Government:  Biggest intake of tax receipts ever in FY 2013 (but still $800 billion short of a balanced budget).

State and Local Gov't:  The top 2 quarters for personal income/property/usage/fuel etc etc tax "revenues" ever, 4th Qtr 2012, 2nd Qtr 2013, with a prediction that 4th Qtr 2013 will break another quarterly record.  (Many of them still millions, if not billions in the hole budget wise).

FWIW,

I think the counties around D.C. would still have the highest median incomes in the U.S. even if we were more fiscally responsible.

The government revenues are a large part of the economy and the administration of the redistribution is centered around D.C. thus leaving a lot of well paying jobs in a dense area.

Everyone kept telling me that when I moved there in 1999. Never understood how that could even be remotely close to true. Mission Hills as a town is pretty high up, but everyone in Lenexa and Olathe are just riding their nutsacks.
