Can anyone explain why U.S. companies spend 70 Billion Dollars a year on advertising (just on television). I mean I just don't understand it. I know that smart successful companies wouldn't spend so much money unless they are getting a return on their investments, but I've probably seen that little kid AT&T commerical over 200 times, and I'm still not really sure what it's wanting me to know.

Coca-Cola spent 2.9 billion in adverstising in 2010, if they spent 1.9 billion would their profits go down? Is this strictly to reach younger consumers that don't have a high awareness of coke and it's products?

Do advertisements influence dumber people more than smart people (dumber people please chime in)?
That Geico Lizard has a pretty boss accent, but when I shop for car insurance I just have my insurance guy find me the best rate and that's what I go with. Do some people consider the lizard vs. that weirdo progressive lady and then make their decision.

No company on earth likes advertising. The thing is, when it's done well it's incredibly effective at separating people from their money.

Advertizing is a trick.  Many ppl think it is to get dumb ppl to buy what companies tell them to.  What it really is is a trap for dumb ppl to spend money thinking that they can tell ppl what to buy.  Ppl really just buy what is convenient and acceptably priced.

Save your money Coke, and just open a bunch of convenient Coke stands.  I mean, unless you work for the DC Assault, Coke isn't especially easy to find.

How do the radio stations know how many people are listening for measuring ratings?

I'm a sucker for a new taco bell product showcased in a commercial. Also, I wouldn't take my jewelry anywhere but Joslin's for a repair.

There are thousands of companies and tens of thousands of people who justify their existence based on producing advertising results so I don't think it's going anywhere - even as people continue to unplug from television. Whether or not advertising results justify the expense I don't know. Either way, without it there would certainly be a big effect on business - less product innovation as one example. Like Diet Coke? Advertising is one big reason it's here.

It's kinda dumb. Like a select 2000 or some ppl carry around a device all day that picks up the stations they listen to. It doesn't necessarily forecast all of KC. Stations could just find these ppl and pay them underneath the table. With that said, by the time it took me to post this, 610 probably lost 100 listeners.

One thing I've noticed this summer is that Mizzou and KU both regularly advertise season tickets on the radio. Do we not do it because we don't need to advertise to sell tickets to watch an elite product?

you started a thread on a kstate bbs to talk about at&t and their commercial, so i guess it works.
