Over the weekend I attended a game in Manhattan.  My girlfriend attended K-State, I don't hold that against her, and she took me out to Manhattan this weekend for my first ever K-State game.

We arrived in Manhattan at about 1030a on Saturday morning and preceded to Aggieville where we spent the hours leading up to the game at So-Long's saloon (really great place, to be fair).  I did not wear any of my KU gear as I did not want to draw attention to myself.  While sitting at the bar I overheard a conversation between a table full of old balls kstaters.  I hardly ever hear anything about K-state at KU events nor do I speak about K-state either.  However, I listened as these guys flat out called our basketball team overrated.  They also exclaimed that Andrew Wiggins is overrated because he only scored 16 points against Pitt state and they think they can beat KU in Manhattan this year.

Fast forward to the game (the renovations/additions are pretty well done).  As I am sitting there about 11 rows back in the south endzone the score of the KU-UT game is announced on the videoboard.  At the time KU was keeping it close, this was met with several fans booing and shouting "Get it together Texas".  What self-respecting fan of a Kansas school roots for a Texas school to beat a Kansas school?  This continued until a roar erupted as Texas pulled away from KU.  In addition, I heard several slanderous comments in regards to KU.  Including a guy explaining to his 5 or 6 year old daughter about how "We don't like anyone from KU, Jayhawks are dirty people", shortly after his daughter asked why her father was rooting for Texas.

I did not grow up in Kansas and did not know much about KU and their rivalries until I attended KU.  I learned to hate Misery and not really care about K-state.   After this experience, I can't help but think of K-State as the "little brother" syndrome.  They care so much about us when we dont give a **** about them.

 :dunno:

I also came to KU from KCMO suburbs.  I never really cared about the Kstate rivalry either.  The Missouri rivalry was in me before I got to KU and only intensified.  I never knew any KSU fans/grads before I got to KU (or during).  In the work place they typically keep it light because they generally don't know much about the college sports landscape outside of KSU.  It doesn't take long to completely rock them with statistics.

Their internet fans are incredibly annoying.  Probably because most of them are Mausers and have no link to KSU other than KSU was good at football once upon a time and their school isn't D1.  Tshirt fans.

Not a soul in that stadium gave a crap about ku.  Also, I was at So Long when that fan was there and there wasn't a single table of old guys, let alone any talking about ku basketball so that guy is a liar.

The ku fans I know obsess about our loss to Baylor last year.  One of them has it as his screen saver.

Who the eff worries about ku basketball?  That program is so far ahead of ours, I thought everyone pretty much gave up.  I do not believe there was one, much less a table full, of old balls talking about ku basketball.   Maybe the ku guy ran across some special needs adults?

A few weeks ago they flashed the KSU loss across the board at memorial and the hundred or so fans left were going INSANE!

i don't want to call chicat a liar, but ku has played like all 11am games, and ksu cats have started like all their games after the ku boo birds had already lost.

Actually, I was mistaken.  This happened when they were testing the screen and getting the stadium ready as the 'Cats lost to NDSU.  I heard that the KU grad custodial staff was going crazy and it was the loudest Memorial has been all year.

To be fair to KU fans, they are in a really tough position. They look down on K-State and don't consider us to be worthy of being a rival. For the last 100 years, that hasn't been an issue because they had Missouri to focus on. Starting a couple of years ago, there will soon be a whole generation of KU students and fans that will experience how boring college athletics are if they have no rivals. Those students and fans will soon have to make the tough choice of continuing to ride on a rudderless ship, aimlessly moving from meaningless game to meaningless game with no real passion about any of the opponents, or lowering themselves to K-State's level by acknowledging a rivalry with us. It is a horrifying choice for them and I don't envy them for having to make it.
