DEFENSE -- 3 Deep
« on: July 27, 2013, 11:02:04 AM »
This is how I see it stacking up entering camp.  After a bit of analysis, I'm not nearly so worried about the defense.  This is a pretty deep and talented bunch.  Sure, ABJR is gone and virtually irreplaceable and we know that Meshak was a bit of an over-achiever.  However, our overall athleticism (as a whole) is better and outside of MLB we should be as fast, or faster, at almost every spot especially our corners.

And, I'll go ahead and say it... I think we are actually going to be stronger at DT than we have been in the past two years.

WDE
1) Ryan Mueller 245 lb Jr
2) Marquel Bryant 241 lb So
3) Tanner Wood 247 lb Fr

SDE
1) Alauna Finau 258 lb Sr
2) Devon Nash 264 lb Jr
3) Jordan Willis 260 lb Fr

DT
1) Travis Britz 293 lb So
2) Demonte Hood 303 lb RS Fr
3) Matt Seiwart 289 lb Fr or Xavier Gates 316 lb So

DT
1) Chaquil Reed 309 lb Sr
2) Chris Brown 330 lb Sr
3) Valentino Coleman 285 lb Jr or DeAndre Roberts 280 lb Jr

LB
1) Mike Moore 217 lb So
2) DaKorey Johnson 200 lb Jr
3) Miles Copeland 217 lb RS Fr

LB
1) Blake Slaughter 227 lb Sr
2) Will Davis 223 lb RS Fr
3) Nick Ramirez 228 lb Fr

LB
1) Tre Walker 225 lb Sr
2) Jonathan Truman 219 lb Jr
3) Cody Marley 243 lb Jr

2) Kip Daily 180 lb Sr
3) Dorian Roberts 168 lb Sr

S
1) Ty Zimmerman 204 lb Sr
2) Jonathan Coleman 205 lb So
3) Travis Green 210 lb

S
1) Dante Barnett 186 lb So

I agree with most of this except for DT. I've heard Gates has had a good summer and is challenging Britz.

I have ZERO issue with that if true...  I think we'll be very pleasantly surprised with the D-Line play.

I really hope Marquel Bryant can bulk up enough to start over Finau. I think he has a lot of potential.

I think Truman starts at LB over Slaughter...based off of speed alone

BP..have you heard or seen anything about Carl Miles that leads you to believe he would start over Morgan Burns? Just curious.

Britz is pretty badass so that would be pretty great news. Also, the D really looks decent on paper.  (Having Burns and Barnett at safety next year excites me. That's some fast crap going on.)

My understanding is that Miles had very good pre-bowl and spring camps, plus he was rotating in ahead of Burns during spring game.  Burns has SICK wheels, so if he overtakes Miles in technique and knowledge of the defense I have no qualms about that whatsoever.

As for the Truman/Slaughter debate, I think they'll split snaps fairly evenly although Slaughter will get the nod early on simply based on the sacrifice he made for the good of the team by redshirting last year.... Just my opinion based on how I think it'll play out.

I thought I remembered reading that Walker would be in the middle this year, not at Will like he was last year before he got hurt.

I have heard that as well... I think we are pretty interchangable with the Sam & Mike backers, but the kids playing Will won't slide inside much.

If Mike Moore is a number one at one of the linebacker spots going into fall I don't see him staying there.  He's too undersized--needs to bulk up more.  I saw him in Dillon's with his gf one evening and I was left wondering if he even lifts weights.  I'm a believer Truman will be a starter at one spot and Will Davis will make a strong push for another.  It's great to be back btw!  Hello to everyone again.

I do not think Chris Brown made it to town?  At least the roster indicated he is not here :dunno:

I had such high hopes for Slaughter when he committed 9 years ago.

Negative ghost rider. Also one of the freshmen (Woods, Willis) will start by the end of the year. Otherwise we would of recruited more juco DEs last spring.

I bet Blake Slaughter starts the whole year as well.

The defense was 1st in Big 12 conference scoring last year giving up 23.3 points per game.

This year I am thinking

1. TCU  18 points per game

2. Kansas State/OU/ISU/OSU/Baylor all hanging out around 24 points per game.

7. Texas  27 points per game

8.  Tech  32 points per game

9. KU      36 points per game

10. WVU  40 points per game

I think overall scoring will be down in the Big 12 this year due to mass exodus of Quality Quarterbacks.  We are not going to be as good as last year but I think TCU, Texas and probably OSU are the only teams that will be better overall than last years teams.

Yes, however OBz depth chart changing since then isn't one of those things unless, of course, there's been a serious arrest that hasn't made the news.
