First, there is really no easy way to get through the awkward phase. If you are in college, or work outside, you can just wear a ball cap for a few months and try and hide it.
There is no magic hair cut that will make it look good during the awkward phase.
If your hair is course/thick/wavy, then you'll have a bit harder time of it. Mine is pretty wavy and pretty course. I basically just said eff it, and let it go for several months. To attempt to tame it, I put loads of sculpting paste and crazy crap like that in it to make it somewhat presentable. A CEO of a client once referred to me as "the guy with the mushroom hair" during the awkward phase.

If you have straight hair, there is much less of an awkward phase.
It also helps to have a pretty clear goal of what you want your hair to look like. Early on, I was kinda thinking Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone. It pretty much still looks like that, sometimes I trim it a bit shorter, and sometimes it gets a bit longer.
