Title: Support thread: growing your hair out
Post by: Emo EMAW on July 15, 2013, 09:37:06 AM
Has anyone ever grown their hair out?  I'm a military brat so I've always had short hair.  But I do have nice hair and I think I'm ready to let it flow.  But how do you get through that super awkward middle stage?  Like now it's nice and neat and then it'll be just everywhere!  Do you just stop cutting it all together or do you keep the neck neat and such?  Do you talk over a strategy with your barber?  Also how do you resist the outside pressure to quit looking like a damn mess and cut it?  Also, I assume it's ball cap time every minute you're not at work?  Super worried here guys.  Thanks for the help.

Just keep getting hair cuts, only less frequent than you normally do and have it cut to a longer length every time. That will make the process gradual and it won't ever look really bad.

Emo's mom said one time I asked her "mom how does the cow get into my room every night?" (That was my super cute way of telling you I have mad cow licks, too.  Like a whole herd.  Dairy, not beef cattle.)

Got a haircut before prom senior year, didn't have another until February of sophomore year at KSU. Kind of mixed reviews, at first it was awkward emo-style(which you may like), but then it got to the stage of girls saying "wow you have hot long hair, I want to grab", unfortunately it turned into "omg eww a hippie" at the end. Donated it to locks of love, so some good came of it.

I mostly did it because I was too poor to spend money on haircuts. It takes good hair genes to grow it properly, so consider that

I'm in the process of growing mine out for the first time really.  I've had one haircut this year, and it was meant to be just a trim.  Never would've been able to do this, except my gf gave me constant positive reinforcement.  Now I'm getting lots of compliments.

But I so would've cut it back to my normal short prep school 'do if it wasn't for the gf.

Oh, here's a tip: start using conditioner when it grows out.  Not necessary for short hair, but it helps if you have any length.

OK, good luck emo!

I would be worried about being overly hot all the time(both in temp and appearance) and feel like I would have to constantly have it pulled back in an awkward d00d thing like Zusi.

Anyway, if you are going to do it, shoot for this: (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffakeskcblogger.files.wordpress.com%2F2012%2F02%2Fzusi-after1.jpg&hash=ec17b6cf69ce6c71515c676ae3d2b145f13fda90)

I grew my hair out summer before Sophmore year, and wore it long for about a year before donating it to locks of love (to give you an idea of how long it got)

Bandannas look cool with long hair, can help you through the awkward mid-length range, if you can take people calling it a "dew rag" every now and then  :shakesfist:

I'd be willing to bet that the people advising getting it cut "only less frequently" never have actually grown out long hair.  If you want to look like Justin Beiber, thats probably fine, but if you want to look like a mountain man or a rock star, keep the scissors away.  The problem is that your average barber doesn't do long hair, so you have to go to a stylist, who will give you a lady haircut.  It was actually the reason i ended up cutting it all off, it looked BA growing out, because it was naturally layered (started with a pretty close crop and never touched it for like a year) but as soon as i let a stylist "trim it up" it never quite looked right.

My hair is about like this.  I'm not going any longer.

I just got out of a videoconference and I couldn't stand to see myself on screen.  Have to tuck my hair behind my ears to look presentable.  I previously had a beard a couple times for a few months, just to do it.  Same with long hair: eventually this is all coming off and I'm going back to short...

Oh man, what a thread...

First, there is really no easy way to get through the awkward phase.  If you are in college, or work outside, you can just wear a ball cap for a few months and try and hide it.

There is no magic hair cut that will make it look good during the awkward phase.

If your hair is course/thick/wavy, then you'll have a bit harder time of it.  Mine is pretty wavy and pretty course.  I basically just said eff it, and let it go for several months.  To attempt to tame it, I put loads of sculpting paste and crazy crap like that in it to make it somewhat presentable.   A CEO of a client once referred to me as "the guy with the mushroom hair" during the awkward phase.

If you have straight hair, there is much less of an awkward phase.

It also helps to have a pretty clear goal of what you want your hair to look like.  Early on, I was kinda thinking Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone.  It pretty much still looks like that, sometimes I trim it a bit shorter, and sometimes it gets a bit longer.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdavidmcgough.com%2Fphotos%2Fthumbs%2FMichael%2520Douglas%25201985%2520NYC.jpg&hash=57fdf5a9d8d62fa5459b86399208cb7fc26422c6)

I was initially very nervous about work, but have since found it to be passable in even the most conservative situations if you dress appropriately.  It's a bit eccentric, for sure.

Congratulations on the purchase of your shiny new long hair! Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Pros:

lots of options! wow, you can do all sorts of things with your long hair!
where does that part go? doesn't matter! because long hair!
headbands/bandanas look so cool on you now!
charming amounts of hair coming out the sides of your favorite hat!
also you don't have to ever wear a hat! but you can if you want to! because long hair!
get it wet and watch how it all goes in one direction! (preferably towards the rear of your head)
no more getting a sunburnt head, or mistaken for a riley rat!
that filly can't run her hands through your buzz cut, stupid!
if you play an instrument, congratulations! you now look better playing it!
ray-bans, man

Cons:

holy crap you can never and i mean never skip a morning shower before work anymore
previously discussed awkward in-between time is a real thing. very crucial to keep it under control during the in-between time. hats are your friend outside work. during work, just shower all the time and hope for the best
you are now that guy with the long hair. depending on your job and social circles, this may be a negative
can have a tendency to always fall in your eyes. get that crap out of there; you don't want to look like a delinquent.

This is where mine is now. Was definitely tough to get through the weird phase at the office and all, as Pete already stated, but a little product always helps. I usually almost always wore a hat away from work for awhile too, as everyone else has stated. But, I think the biggest key is keeping the back/neck area trimmed/groomed while growing out the top/sides to make it look like its almost always supposed to be that way (not all one length and giving away you're letting it go). Looks good at work now, can wear hats of any kind still, and can rock a pretty sweet top/backish pony tail when working out or exercising. Give it a go, it's well worth it.

Cartier, in your line of work, the more eccentric you look the better.  Grow it out long enough that you can roll with a pony tail or something fun like that.

If you stop getting hair cuts right now, you'll have a great one going by Christmas, and by the Big 12 tourney next year you'll look like a 70's rock legend.

Paging Matt Siebrandt's Left Hand

Love this thread, too.

It started when my two older bros and I buzzed our heads June '12 together and I haven't touch the lion's mane since. This manifested itself when my  summer became insanely miserable (plus I was going into my last semester at K-State) so I figured I'd just let it go since I was lacking ambition to cut it.

At first I just wanted to make it long enough to get a sweet mullet w/ racing stripes so my bros could laugh at/with me :emawkid:. That changed when a philly I have been crushing on said I look pretty good for a dude with long hair and that pushed me through the awkward stage.

I have dirty blonde coarse hair and my hair role model is Pat Tillman (the alive NFL version)

Emo, give it a week, then set up some function with friends that would require her to wear shorts.  Something outside on a hot day or maybe a trip to a public pool or something.

Basically, if you are comfy with the idea of awkward hair, you can out last her on this.  Stay strong.

Emo, give it a week, then set up some function with friends that would require her to wear shorts.  Something outside on a hot day or maybe a trip to a public pool or something.

Basically, if you are comfy with the idea of awkward hair, you can out last her on this.  Stay strong.

Good idea.  I'll tell her for my bday I want to go to the hottest coolest place in Kansas (Schlitterbahn).

Has to include friends.  Lots of ppl can be comfy looking hairy in front of a bunch of screaming brats at a water park where you don't know anyone.

:FranticallyTakingNotes:

hey cartier, when pete talks about hair you listen, ok?

there won't be a "it's cold out, what do you guys do to warm up?" thread on my watch

Tip #2: Shirts with collars are your friend when growing out your hair.

My 5-days-a-week work outfit is button-down shirts with collars -- sometimes with ties -- and those are great for growing your hair out.  (Plus you generally look like you smell fantastic.)  Weekends: polo shirts with collars.  No need for a neck trim or any other trim if you can rely on collars.

P.S.  If you need a neck trim, it must still be pretty short, yeah?

2-3 inches at the base?   Or is that from the top of your head?  2-3 inches would cover your neck, right?

Easy way to grow hair out is to start with a regular short on the sides longer on top cut, basically ask for a "classic taper."  If your hair is pretty short to begin with then you'll have to let it get to a couple of inches on the top.

The taper will be a good base for growing it out, but make sure you don't get straight lines on the back of your hairline.  You'll want that blended/ tapered as well as it helps keep the neckline looking clean longer.  Also, make sure that your barber/ stylist is able to get a good blend as the long hair on top transitions to the shorter hair on the side.

After that just let it grow and shave the back of your neck every once in awhile.  You can go in for a trim from time to time as well, just get the same cut, but don't let them take much, if any off the top.  This will help keep the length in proportion.

I know this because I'm pretty lazy about getting haircuts and have found this to look decent as it grows from short to long.

Of course if you want to be long all over from the beginning then disregard what I've said but you run the risk of unwittingly rocking a mulletish head.

2-3 inches isn't very long yet. Let it go and play jazz (people will read again!) for the next 4 months. At this point begin having the dead ends trimmed every six weeks. Roughly 6 months after this begin tanning and learn to throw a bronze long spear. Not much can stop you at this point.

If your goal is getting your hair to be as long as possible as quick as possible, then cutting your hair would be counter-productive. Have you considered just getting a glorious wig, emo? You could just get a color and style that matches where you want to end up and then just tie your hair up under the wig until you have the required length.

I've had exactly three "trims" since June 11 2013.  That's last year!  A trim is just clean up the neck and sideburns and cut the tips to stimulate growth.  If I comb my hair straight forward it gets to just below my nose.  My mom calls me Scott Disick.  <--don't care how I spelled it

Do trims really do much to stimulate growth? I'm trying to grow out my hair, but it gets stuck about the length yours is at right now. Wondering if paying for a trim is worth it.

No idea.  I mean it grows.  Not sure if the trim helps.

All it takes is one Jared Leto comparison and you never plan another haircut/trim.

I used to do that crap in college, but when my hair gets long now, it looks like a lame attempt to cover up a SLIGHTLY receding hair line.

First time growing my hair out since I was just a little guy. Looking for suggestions on a good pomade or product for thick hair that washes out fairly easy. Right now when I comb it back it resembles Machine Gun Preacher-era Gerard Butler

I only shampoo maybe every three days.  After a shampoo that hair day sucks, the second is better, the third is heaven, and the fourth would be greaseball.

Anyway I've been recommended Moroccan oil which I've dabbled with. Mostly rely on this Garnier product which is like crew but way cheaper.  YMMV obvs.

You should punch yourself in your rough ridin' face for suggesting people think you look like Jared rough ridin' Leto.  What you're saying is you're rough ridin' incredibly beautiful.  If that's the case then nobody rough ridin' cares what your hair looks like.  You're goddamned beautiful.  Hair does not matter one bit.  Shave it, grow it out, style it however you like, does not rough ridin' matter.

The nerve of this beautiful sonofabitch.

American Crew, or Redken dishevel if you don't want the shine. A little of any of the good product goes a long way.
