2013 recruiting class
« on: July 02, 2013, 11:56:50 AM »
didn't want to clog up the recruiting thread with this stuff, but i did want to post my thoughts on the class as a whole.

i'm enthusiastic about the pg.  it sucks that he can't play/practice to start, and i imagine there must be concerns about his pg instincts/game mgmt or he'd be more highly rated, but overall he looks like a quality player that kstate was able to steal due to his academic problems.

i'm very down on the transfers.  a guy that was a low-efficiency/high volume player on a losing team in a lowish mid-major league and a guy that made absolutely no impact on a team on the same level as kstate.  i wouldn't expect either to contribute much to a winning big 12 team and the fact that they eat up three scholarship years to play two makes them even worse.  and they can't even really be run off (not ethically, anyways, although ethics never stops coaches).

i'm ok with the other four freshmen.  they all seem like reasonable as big 12 recruits.  if they were the bottom 4 of a 7 man class, you'd likely consider it a pretty solid class.  if a couple of them turn out to be average or better big 12 players and the other two are run off, i don't think you can complain.  if one turns out to be another pullen, then you've hit the lottery.

all said, i still am surprised and disappointed with how poorly the staff recruited in their first two years.  but the great thing with bball is that even so, a good 2014 class can turn the program right back around.

Westicles is a wildcard. Have heard Edwards has been impressive, really really good athlete. The only thing I know about Brandon Bolden is that he weighs 180 pounds soaking wet.

he was a really, really good athlete at maine, too.  not a really, really good bball player though.

Bolden is said to be the worst scholarship bball player ever to attend Georgetown.  The walk ons played more minutes then he did.  Tthe chose not to redshirt him because they knew he wasn't going to be around anyway.

He's a buddy of Jevon Thomas but considering the questions on Thomas' character and past I don't know that we should be going out of our way to surround Jevon with his old buddies.

Who would you call K-States worst scholarship player ever? I don't think you can call a player the worst scholarship player ever until their college basketball career.

I think the thing that makes me the most angry about this class is it can really reinforce the old "you can't recruit to Manhattan" bs.

I would start this discussion with Joe Leonard and suggest we limit it to guys that stayed all 4 years.

I think Westicles can be a nice role player who may be able to play the 4.

If we had recruited a quality big or not run Diaz off, I wouldn't think this class is quite as depressing. The team is just going to be awful next year, though.

Seriously?  I would have bet the farm that it would turn out exactly as it did...I actually posted/tweeted this like a bagillion times.  And I agree that the recruiting has been poor.

yes.  weber recruited well, at least according to recruit rankings, at ui and kstate had been nationally prominent (well, at least nationally existent) for five-six years.  i thought there would be a little bit of a dropoff from his illinois classes, but i didn't think it'd be anything close to this bad.

Considering the 2 main recruits on the staff were either in Germany playing Pro ball or a low major last year, It isn't surprising they were behind in recruiting for 2013.

didn't telep or someone say it would take Weber a few classes to figure out his identity here? That probably explains it.

anybody who judges weber before taking at least five years to fully analyze the situ is jumping the gun imo. four more years to go.

I thought they would have brought in a top 100 by now. I like some of the guards, but with 3 stars you never know.

And the answer to the question is George Hill or Travis Canby.

The worst thing about the class is that he didn't target a quality or at least serviceable big, a clear 2013 must, from the start but only got in on an academic risk late.
Oh well, we're going after a number of good ones for 2014, which of course we'll whiff on, too.
