KU basketball, what happens after Bill Self dies?
« on: June 25, 2013, 09:23:51 AM »
i think it's fair to admit that coach self has gotten the program to second tier status behind the traditional blue bloods like ucla, kentucky, duke, indiana.  and despite what he had to do to get them there (LOIC, cheating scandals, porn addicted assistant coach), i would say they're firmly planted and respected in that second tier of programs.

but the guy is going to die sooner rather than later, and then what happens next?  CBB is a dirty business and getting dirtier - in this respect, KU would seem to be positioned well as they've proven not to worry about the NCAA rule book.  but at the same time, their chancellor is an academic.  will she continue to let the reputation of their academics be smeared by the athletic department?  i doubt it.

college programs that probably thought they would not miss a beat and are still struggling or took some time to reemerge from mediocrity after a regime change:

Alabama football
Notre Dame football
Nebraska Football
USC Football
Ohio State Football
Florida State Football

Indiana Basketball
UNLV basketabll
Houston Basketball
Kentucky Basketball
UNC Basketball
Michigan Basketball
UCLA Basketball

...and the list is much longer.   don't underestimate how challenging it can be to follow a coaching legend. there are numerous examples in both football and basketball of programs struggling immediately after a legend hangs it up.  even if the "legend" is built off of endless cheating scandals.

it's not too much of a stretch to say KU is self / self is ku and while good now, not Blue Blood.

on the other hand, epsn has their head shoved way to far up ku's ass for ku to ever decline, regardless of who takes over after coach self.

Ted Owens had them on the road to no where, in Ted's final season it wasn't unusual for ku to have 7-8,000 empty seats for games.    I went and saw them play OU and the hated Billy Tubbs (they won BTW) and you could have shot a howitzer full of bird shot into the endzone area at both ends and maybe hit 200 people.

Dean Smith in all matter of speaking has bailed their ass out twice and Self had ties to ku from the Larry Brown era.

Danny Manning?

lets say that they happen to hit the powerball again, after self dies.  but then that coach dies.  what happens then?

you usually don't hit the powerball more than one time, maybe twice, max.

back in the crapper.

I'd be more concerned about him getting run up by the NCAA.

Guys, I have heard that Paul Pierce owns a super expensive condo somewhere in Lawrence and that, even though he absolutely hates Lawrence, he is maintaining ownership so that he can come back and take the reigns and right the ship to the level of respectable payouts and illegitimate child management that KU had grown accustom to back in his day.  No more of this stuff-being-reported-in-the-press bullshit.

Grumblings?  Rumblings?  You decide...

The KU fans think they will be fine and that they can easily get big names to take a job in Lawrence. I don't think that is the case. Even some of the big names that KU has had in the past are largely nobody's outside of Lawrence, KS. Case in point, last night I had dinner with a business woman that works for a company that works with my company. She is a crazy college sports fan and really loves her Crimson Tide. She was keenly aware of who the Kansas State Wildcats are and she was disappointed devastated when we lost last fall and failed to make it to the NC so her Tide would have had some real competition.

Anyway, she told me that on her flight into RDU she sat in front of some guy with grey (she said grey and not silver, which made me lol) hair and that another guy walked up to the grey haired guy and said, "Coach Williams, thank you for everything you have done for the program." This business lady/ college sports savant asked me if I had any idea who 'Coach Williams' was. She provided a hint saying that he had on a light blue/baby blue shirt. I said that it was probably Roy Williams, and that I only knew that because I was from KS and that she shouldn't feel bad because nobody in the South knows who he is.

So yeah, Wacky is probs right on this one.

they'll be fine.  they are a one-sport school, so they will focus their athletics department into keeping the hoops program (men) in the 2nd tier of the ncaa.

Guys, I have a feeling that they will mush Paul until they hear from Brad Stevens.  I really hope they get Brad.  I mean, I have no idea if Paul is any better at coaching than he is at not getting stabbed a bunch in the face, but if they put everything they have to go all in on Brad and get turned down, I don't know if they could take that as an institution and recover as anything healthy on the other end.

We dan hope they hire some loser coach who was freshly fired for failing at another BCS program, but I'm pretty sure they won't go that route.

Agreed.  Brad is ice cold.  Brad won't be afraid of the best basketball job in the nation and shy away all the way to a second tier school.

Both Brad and the VCU coach mushed KU already.  THey sent out feelers when they thought Self might kill himself over this divorce.

Tim, I understand this is hard to think about, but we are all dying.  It's just a matter of when, but when you run your body in the red(nascar reference for the wt ku fans) all the time through huge job stress, huge amounts of infidelity leading to marriage stress, and large alcohol and most likely other illicit drug use the process tends to accelerate.

Living hard can be fun but your body doesn't like being treated like a dumpster that cheats on it's wife a bunch.

Chin up lil bro, life always moves on and time heals a bunch of wounds(other than a small few std's that can often come with banging so many party chicks with no regard for health).
