there is not much in life i enjoy more than bikepacking in the mountains. this time i planned a 4-day loop with a couple buds into Coeur d'Alene national forest in the Idaho panhandle. it was the most mileage (230+ miles) and climbing (16,000 ft+) we'd done, and it ended up being my favorite so far!

primitive camped in hammocks on top of Spyglass Peak and then Moon Pass, and the 3rd night in an actual campground along the St Joe river. my friend brought his fly rod and caught some fish for dinner on day 3 which ruled bigly.

if you are allergic to sun flare, strap in bc this post will be tough sledding for you

morning on spyglass peak

north fork of the CDA river

descending from Moon Pass on day 3

this is the part i am most proud of. when i was researching the area, i came across an old blog post from some guy who found a beautiful "secret" waterfall. while he would not say exactly where it was, from his description it sounded like it would be near our route. i got a little hung on up on finding this particular waterfall, and after some more digging i came across a random FB comment on some other post where somebody said what creek that the waterfall was maybe on. i tried to find the post later but couldn't, so it was pretty flimsy info at best. i found the creek on the map and marked the spot and thought if we have time maybe we can poke around for a minute. anyway on day 3 we get to the spot i had marked, and as soon as we stopped biking we could hear the sound of a waterfall. i got really excited like holy crap i am irl sherlock holmes. we eventually found a tiny opening into the woods that was the entrance to an umarked hiking trail. i should mention and you can see from the photos above that the terrain everywhere around is pretty dry and Colorado-y. after about 1/4 mile on foot we enter like a completely different dimension and there is moss, ferns, etc everywhere. anyway of course photos and videos can't do it justice but it was crazy to experience. peaceful and violent at the same time. quiet and deafening at the same time. ?!? VQ ass moment in time for me.

the bikes

random resupply cabin in the middle of nowhere. weird emphasis on DVD's and eggs

swam in lake Coeur d'Alene, which felt amazing after 200+ miles. we probably looked a little feral but this nice lady jumped in and swam with her dog too.

we were getting closer back to CDA, cursing another climb as it was getting late in the day and everyone was ready to be done. stoke levels hovering at 0. but then we got more views and an incredible ride into town around the lake at sunset. perfect capper.

Mocat, I'm jelly of the great biking trip.  Nice pictures and great comments/descriptions.  The only thing is how you guys can bike 230 miles w/o a bad case of red ass?  :surprised:
Hot time in Kat town tonight.

Yeah, big fires all summer around Stanley and the Sawtooths.  CDA is much farther north.

I will never probably do anything like this but I am always so jealous of those that do. Just being away for a few days in the mountains like this has to feel just amazing. I would imagine that while you were prob exhausted at the end, your mental state had to be amazing. Maybe I need something like this in my life before I get too old ballz. :dunno:

irl the two things we were most concerned with were brown bears and brown shirts. We didn't end up running into either one.

During one little break in the woods we heard some crunching underbrush, I turned around and saw two big black shapes on all fours moving slowly. Turned out to be cows that had wandered into the forest, but my friend had drawn his bear spray like a cop at a broken taillight stop lol

I'm glad you mentioned the mental state. It was really like being high for 4 days straight. Every little thing you encounter is like a huge dopamine injection. Coming across fresh water, turning a corner to see a new view, getting to the top of a climb, going 30+ down a gravel forest road descent, eating fresh caught trout with hot ramen noodles, even just inhaling clean mtn air surrounded by evergreens, it's all just constantly spiking your receptors (??). Every night you pass out really soon after dark in a satisfyingly tired state. Every morning you wake up whenever the sun does, and after a hot cup of (actually pretty good these days) instant coffee, you go off to find a poop hole and get ready to do it again, not knowing what you'll see that day. It took me 2-3 days to come down mentally.

i should also mention bikepacking.com is a fantastic resource. i found an Idaho route intended for 6 days, and modified it for 4 days; i reached out to the route creator and he was very helpful also. but there are tons of routes all over the country, and not all of them are so climb-y or remote. i personally started out by just trying an overnighter to Hillsdale Lake straight from my doorstep one time. there are tons of manmade lakes within 50 miles of kc (and likely wherever you live if not kc)
