Great pics Mocat!  Yellowstone is truly beautiful.  How many days did you spend there?  Did you see any bears?

Great pics Mocat!  Yellowstone is truly beautiful.  How many days did you spend there?  Did you see any bears?

5 nights camping at Madison campground.

saw 4 grizzlies from ~1 mile away in Hayden valley, using a scope. they appeared to be tussling over a carcass. was amaze.

one morning we woke up at 4 am and drove to Slough Creek in the Lamar valley and observed 8 wolves for like 2 hours, also ~1 mile away using a scope. there were a bunch of pups just screwing around, and then an adult showed up with some food (couldn't tell what it was) and then all the pups went apeshit and started howling, and the adult led them at full sprint up the side of a hill where (apparently, according to the wolf watching nerds who were there) the adult would regurgitate some food for the pups. it was incredible to watch.

i also jumped off a cliff in Firehole Canyon. i mean i say cliff but it was probably like 30 feet. it appeared to be approximately 7 million feet high when i was up there tho. i have a pretty hilarious gopro video of the jump. i unconsciously made a Hulk/schwarzenegger sound in midair. i even bitched out at first but then decided to do it since several small children did it right in front of me no problem. it was real VQ type stuff

Nice! Looks like you got off the Grand Loop as much as possible, as you should.

Where is pic 5? Mystic Falls Trail?

also i have an enormous pro tip for any would-be yellowstone VQ'rs: wake up early and get out there early. come back to your campground for lunch, and then go out again for sunset. the crowds are huge but they are also a bunch of idiots and they do everything in the middle of the day, so you can avoid them by using the enormous pro tip listed above. another great benefit is that you get more wildlife action at dawn & dusk, and also your photos look better.

Are there hotels around or do you have to camp? Also can you rent an atv to get to these places?

i believe there are hotels in a couple spots. West Yellowstone, MT is only about 15 minutes away from Madison campground, and there is an inn from 1904 at Old faithful that is pretty cool to see on the inside, but i assume it is v. expensive to stay there. camping is the way to go though. there were flushable toilets at this campground that were cleaned every morning.

Yellowstone is approximately infinity square miles, so you will need a real vehicle to drive everywhere. in 5 nights we filled up the tank twice just from driving around inside the park  :sdeek:

We used the Mystic Falls trailhead a couple of years ago to get to our backcountry camp, and our own private waterfall (for the night). Lovely area.

Lodging in the park isn't necessarily that expensive (except for the Lake Lodge), but you do have to book way far in advance and be ok with shared bathrooms.  The historic rooms at Old Faithful Inn are $115, they are really nice and the shared bathrooms are immaculate.

Wow mocat awesome pics.  What kind of phone?  And where did you host the pictures?

Looks like a great trip!  I've never seen a wild wolf or grizzly bear in person so I'm pretty jelly.  Have been up Slough before and saw tracks but that was it.

I am really glad you did a trip like that, like really experienced it.  Like you mentioned a lot of people are stupid and lazy and their vacation isn't nearly as fulfilling.

I need a new phone and am waiting until the iPhone camera is as good as the Samsung (that one is really good wow).

yeah i am sure a lot of people spend a week in yellowstone and leave feeling like they got ripped off or the park is overrated, etc, just because they did it completely wrong. i went with mrs mocat's family who have gone a few times before, or else i probably would have been part of the dumb crowd as well.
