t-y. i've been incredibly lucky this year with National Parks: Joshua Tree, Denali, Canyonlands, and a bunch of national forests in CO.

thanks for that, mocat. tough to beat a road trip through the American West if you do it right (which you clearly did)

Love that area around CB. Kids and IPA Fiance are anti VQ camping. So haven't been back there since I was in high school. Love the pics! Class 4! That view have me butterflies!

Great work, I'm choosing paradise basin as my favorite pic but the pic with 2 different colored sky's was a close second.

Crested Butte is wonderful.  Such amazing scenery in every direction.  Race was timed perfectly to enjoy the aspens.

Mile ~6, getting up out of the fog

Mile ~13, second of several stream crossings made for cold, sloshy feet throughout the race

Mile ~18, looking back on the route while getting frustrated with the climb up to >11k feet

Mile ~21, finally heading back down

Mile~25, one last romp through the aspens

Absolutely amazing scenery. Of all the awesome stuff to see in CO, the aspens might be at the top of my list. I'm v. impressed that you were able to make those photos while racing. What kind of shoes / socks were your wearing?

Beautiful pics tdaver.  Also I am skeptical that I could run on ground like that for very long without spraining my ankle or something.

Altra Timp with Injinji socks

When you’re out there for 6 hours and not in contention to win anything, might as well get some pics.

Ankles are definitely a concern, and I’ve got a weak one that gets me frequently.  You can’t zone out like on the road.  Have to see every step or you will eventually fall on your face.

I tried running on a mountain trail just outside of Lakewood one time. It wasn't all that bad, but I don't think I would have survived the race that tdaver ran.

Beautiful pics! One question about the stream crossing one though, it looks like they are just running down the middle of the stream and not actually crossing it. Whats up with that?

Just looks that way because it’s a wide, flat crossing following a 4x4 road.  Others were as you would expect.  But there was one crossing that required going upstream for 20-30 yards.

Who's Questin' this summer??!?!?!?

@tdaver I'm curious, what can you tell me bout Logan, UT? I'm going there next week and will be there for a couple weeks for a work thing. I will have almost zero long-term getaway time because the only weekend I'm really there, I'll be driving up to Montana to visit a friend. But I would love some easy late-afternoon hikes that are drivable from Logan if you got any.

I'm heading out to SE Wyoming this summer to camp and trout fish for a week along the North Platte river and the mountains around it.

July 9-16th. This is probably favorite camp site on some random BLM land.

i used to live in logan.  i can't remember the name of any hikes, but drive up basically any canyon and there's a trail of some sort there.  if you want higher country, logan canyon is the easiest way to drive up to a trailhead at higher elevation.  logan canyon also gets way more people than anywhere else.

nice place.  very easy/quick to get out of town and up into the mountains.

I haven’t spent much time in Logan, really only driving through a couple times on the way up to Bear Lake.  But I think that drive up Logan Canyon is worthwhile if you can fit it.  Tony Grove is pretty but too early for wildflowers.  There’s a short loop trail in the pines at the top of the pass before heading down to Bear Lake.  Then get a raspberry shake at LaBeau’s and chill on the beach of the Caribbean of the Rockies.  Maybe download the Alltrails app to pick out hikes closer to Logan in the canyons like sys said.

There’s supposed be a new brewery opening up very soon in Logan.  First one ever!  And try out Aggie ice cream at USU to compare to Call Hall.

Doing a mini-quest with one of the kids in a couple of weeks. Going to camp by Cottonwood Creek near Buena Vista, do some hiking and listen to the creek with one of the kids.

if you have time you could jump up to Leadville for lunch or something and try and get your hands on a Melanzana
