Next day I followed the green river up the mountains.

Didn't catch any fish but it was gorgeous.

When I was leaving the campground there was an old fashioned horseback cattle drive going on that slowed me down.

Decided to drive through Tetons/Yellowstone the next day to get to the Cody area. I did not realize you had to pay $35 to enter each park so it was a $70 toll road basically.

Fished a bit along the snake river in the Tetons with no luck.

Yellowstone Lake was bigger than I thought. Overall impression of Yellowstone/Tetons was there were way to many people there, bougie vision questers.

I actually liked the scenery of the Shoshone National forest better than Yellowstone, not as many trees and more "Rugged"

The drive from Cody back down to Encampment was alot of sage brush but also some of the best views I have seen in my life. Wind River Canyon south of Thermopolis

About 25 miles southeast of Riverton you climb some bluffs and have an amazing view of the Wind River Mountains.

Pictures don't really capture the scale but it was awesome and something I hadn't expected.

I also saw this giant garter snake crossing a road at my campground in the Shoshone National forest and took a picture just for @sys

That’s a helluva vision quest, ben ji.  Great route and pics.  You’re right about the national parks.  They are so overrun with people these days, it’s often not even worth the effort.

annual VQ to Moab & CO is in the books.

day 1, made it to South Fork, CO and set up a quick camp in Rio Grande NF

day 2, drove to Lake City for breakfast, then did a couple 4wd mountain passes. Cinnamon Pass to Silverton for lunch, then Ophir Pass to Telluride for a quick stop before heading to Moab. Telluride is only about 2 hours from our campsite in Moab, but they are worlds apart topographically.  saw a guy right in front of me do his best to roll his pickup truck on Ophir pass, which is hard to do because it's a pretty mild trail.

in moab, drove White Rim / Potash road. incred scenery inside Canyonlands NP. it's pretty far away from Moab so Potash gets a little monotonous by the end but views are silly.  you can see the Shafer switchbacks in the 2nd photo

i did Fins n Things again, because it's just about the most fun you can have in a vehicle, imo. i don't have any good photos since i was driving and there is an obstacle about every 30 seconds.

rented sups and floated about 7 miles on the Colorado. the water is incredibly low right now so the float was slow AF. still pretty cool.

ended up going to 4 different waterfalls / swimming holes while we were there, and did some more general screwing around in town (quesadilla food truck!). total of 5 nights camping at Ken's Lake campground

departed Moab via 128 and met up with some Denver friends in Palisade for a long weekend in an airbnb. There are like 20 wineries in Palisade, and you can rent a bike for like $35 all day and just cruise around and get wine drunk. 10/10 huge recommend. no photos of that since it's not really VQ.
Floated the Colorado (again) but this time the water was high and fast and muddy from a recent mudslide upriver, and inflatable kayaks instead of sups. scenery is better in Moab but a more fun floating experience in Palisade.

once the wine hangos cleared up we took Kebler Pass to Crested Butte, and drove up Slate River road to Paradise Divide. this has to be one of the most elite dispersed camping sites in CO. it's at 11k feet, with a valley to the south, Paradise Basin to the north, and views of the Ruby range to the west. stayed here for 4 nights. beautiful sunrises every morning, perfect hiking weather all day, and a light (sometimes heavy) rain shower around dinner time before clearing up for sunset. gorgeous hikes in every direction.
our friends' dog Kona is the fluffy one with Capo. they got along great and more importantly tired each other out every day.

slate river valley

paradise basin

emerald lake

one night it started sprinkling while the sun was still out, which resulted in the sky being two entirely different colors at the same time. is this why it's called Paradise Divide? who's to say. real VQ type stuff here

my good friend and longtime CB resident convinced me to hike Purple Mountain at sunrise with him and some other CB buds. i had never summitted a mountain before but i'm in decent shape so i was like yes absolutely. the trailhead was like right near our campsite so it worked out great, and i got an extra hour of sleep compared to everyone else, who was driving from CB.

you can see Mt Crested Butte in the background, just to the left of center. it's the butte with the crest (lmao)

this one was taken just after Yule Pass, and you can see Yule Lake way off to the left. i backpacked there a couple years ago.

after the first sharp incline we were a bit winded

the summit of Purple Mountain visible here

at the summit. almost 13k ft

there are two sections that are apparently Class 4, which is about as steep & exposed as you get before you need ropes. this is on the way down.

VQ!

Great pics' of rugged outdoors.  Looks like the dogs really enjoyed the VQ.  BTW, it has to be one of my favorite threads on gE.com.
Hot time in Kat town tonight.
