i was just going off of what you said about wanting to be way below $1000 and using your existing gas hookup

if you want to be @ $200-300, charcoal and weber is the way to go.  If you want gas, to get a good one at that price, go used.  I found a 6 burner with a rotisserie burner that would have run me $1100 new for $175 on craigslist.  Only had to replace 2 burners at $44/per burner so I had a kickass grill for under $300.  That is the thing you need to look at, ask them if you can start it up when talking with them, if they say they are out of propane, take your own.  If you start it and it looks like one big flame instead of many small ones as you adjust it, walk away or figure new burners in your price as they will need it.

Reg. $400, i picked one up 2 springs ago for $200 at a Lowe's and i love it.  A bunch of grill if you're doing a big gathering, and a propane or charcoal side for something smaller (though each is still plenty big) to suite your needs

caveat: overall, i love it, but heres what i can say about it so far.  Rust: i've read alot about people having rust problems with them, but as much is true of any grill thats not 100% stainless steel... i keep mine in the garage (its got wheels on one end, so easy to move when done grilling and its cooled down) and after 2 years, no sign of rust.

I have this as well. It's a good grille. I have the side fire box for the smoker too. 3 years in and it's still in good shape. I haven't used a cover on it. I did repaint it this year but that cost like 8 bucks. I probably have used it 100 tiimes per year. I would say that it's held up nicely.

interchangeable yes, so long as you get new orifices, although natural gas grills tend to be stationary for pretty obvious reasons

weber is a great choice.  I'm assuming that if you are using an existing gas line, your grill is going to be pretty stationary and with that being said, I'd stick to a stainless steel model if possible.  This is unless the area your gas line is located is very well sheltered from the elements.

if you have existing counter space as in a cooking island already there, I'd look into just getting a grill head to attach to your existing space.  Bull Outdoor and Lynx make outstanding products but are not cheap.

as has been pointed out, the weber genesis is a fantastic model but it is going to go for around $750 and up unless you find one used

you can always get a less quality one but you do get what you pay for and being in the elements takes it's toll quickly on things that aren't made with quality

Pretty sure there is a parts diff btwn propane and nat gas. I know they sell them designated one way or the other.  Maybe a regulator difference?   Have also been told that you can buy conversion kits.
