new thread so that the boston explosion thread isn't messed with.

people on facebook are going on and on about what a tragedy it is, and how they are sick to their stomach.  i know that facebook posts are normally an over-the-top gut reaction, but i see things like that after any horrific event.

i don't ever get "sick to my stomach" about stuff.  i see what happened, say "bummer," and move on with my day.  is this not normal?  i crack jokes about deaths on here, but IRL i don't make jokes, i just don't really care about those things.

It tells me that there are impacts of these types of events that you either don't understand or don't want to deal with on an emotional level.  Neither makes you a bad person, but it certainly doesn't speak well of you either.

i don't have to deal with this on an emotional level.  people that i don't know were injured/killed in a city that i've been to once and nothing about today's event will ever impact my life.   :dunno:  people die everyday.  it's awful that innocent lives were taken like that, but i'm not going to go into depression about it.

meh

no one said you had to go into depression about what's gone on, but reacting to innocent people dying by simply saying "bummer" seems overtly flippant.

if you don't want to know people's opinions, don't ask for them :dunno:

i want your opinion, pissclams.

I think he already gave it to you.   :bang:

it depends on the event.  it makes me sad to see stuff like the bombing in boston, but I don't get "sick to my stomach."  I mostly get angry that humans are so shitty.  newtown literally made my stomach turn.  I cried real tears.  if you have kids that age, I guess I'm not sure how something like that doesn't upset you on a deep level.

I don't get the facebook posts though.  99% of the people commenting on facebook don't know anyone directly affected by the particular event they are commenting on, so I guess I don't understand why they feel a need to "send thoughts and prayers."  I mean, if praying is your thing then just pray...you don't have to tell all of your friends that you're praying.

I'm a little bummed there's less snark on twitter this afternoon, but I understand why. at the same time, this isn't the kind of event that would have my work tell us to take the afternoon off. So it's somewhere between being a silly ass on twitter and going home from work tragedy. Kind of a strange middle ground.

facebook is fine, though.

You're fine OK. Cat. I'm sick to my stomach because I lived in Boston and still have family & friends there. I have walked on that sidewalk. If this happened in Nashville I would be much less affected.

I also lived in OKC and spent 9 years of my life there. My dad and aunt at one time worked in the Murrah Building. The OKC bombing was more jarring to me than 9/11. During the afternoon of 9/11 I played PlayStation moat of the day.

Anytime a tragedy happens in the U.S. I'm concerned. Especially a potential act of terrorism. The reality of your safety fading year by year is tragic. I try to put myself in the shoes of the victim and it fires me up. Such a rough ridin' pussy way to take someone out and to strike fear in ones life.

It really is an interesting sociological event. Like, do people not want to laugh/see happy things? Are people offended by people wanting to move on  and not dwell on these events?

expanding on this, the use of social media with major entities and corporations is kind of fascinating. Like, why is Wu-Tang Clan expected to tweet "Prayers for Boston" or nothing at all? Not saying it's wrong, it's just interesting times.

Now there's a third element - not ending your pre-scheduled tweets. lol at Dickie V
