Tiger should have been DQ'd but then the masters would suck.

They based it off a new rule that was put in place because people kept calling in after watching tournaments on HD tvs when viewers noticed rules violations that players didn't notice. As a result, players were DQed after signing wrong scorecards. This rule gives tournaments discretion to assess penalties in those cases. They used it here, even though Tiger said exactly what he did and it wasn't because someone called in. Good for CBS and the Masters though.

We've never penalized someone for playing slow but this 14 year old chinaman is pretty uppity so let's make an example of him. OH NO! TIGER NEEDS OUR HELP! USE THAT NEW LENIENCY RULE THAT WASN'T MADE FOR THIS PURPOSE! USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA!

To be fair, the group with the 14 year old was 2 holes behind the group in front of them, so he was really slow and he was warned 3 times. But I still think the penalty was excessive.

Why doesn't the pga have a rules official with every group. Golf will never grow if they keep doing stupid crap like this.

Players police themselves, but there are rules officials all over. Tiger could've easily found one and asked if he wasn't sure, but rules officials only are used with questions from players, they aren't there to call penalties.

I know but once the next shot is hit it should be over.  If you can get called in for breaking rules by some dickweed watching on his hd tv, there should be a rules official with every group.  This isn't the early 1900's.

everything was fine until tiger said he went back 2 yards in the interview. Dug his own hole. Masters had no choice at that point.

Faldo, duval, etc are stupid for saying he should DQ himself.
Sometimes I think of the Book of Job and how God likes to really eff with people.

Yeah, if he had never mentioned the 2 yards, none of this would even be a discussion today. Plus, the fact he did mention it shows he didn't completely understand the rule, which makes the penalty (and not a DQ) a good decision.

In the case of rule 33-7, I think so. The purpose of the rule is to allow tournaments to not DQ players automatically if it's clear a player didn't cheat or intentionally break a rule.

Yeah, this probably didn't help golf a lot, and neither did the slow play penalty. But most well get over it.
