Appliance Specialists!
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:45:15 PM »
I have a 5 year old whirlpool side by side fridge/freezer. it no longer stops running. everything is frozen solid for the last 24 hours. vents are clear, cleaned out the tremendous amount of lint in the coils, the works really. still doesn't shut off. is there a quick fix or am I stuck paying a guy to come fix it?

it's broken.  you have to sell it on craigslist and buy a new one.

It will be $90 to answer this question and another $150 to fix the problem.

Is the coil still frosted over?  Are there drain lines for the mechanics, are they clear? What about the drain line from the freezer down?

Thermostat probs.  Thermostat gets satisfied when a certain temp is reached. If broken, the thermostat won't get satisfied and therefore won't switch off the cooling.

Just a guess. No clue how to fix it or anything.

On my side by side it is in the bottom of the freezer.  Mine got frozen over, caused it to overwork, freeze up the compressor and foul everything up.  I had to empty everything out of my freezer (luckily I had my garage fridge) and let it defrost.  Than I poured hot water down the drain line with bleach to clean the line out.  Under the fridge there was a pan which collects water from that drain line and any condensation off the compressor and condenser.  Make sure that pan is clear, and the drain line is attached properly with no kinks, bends, or contact which could block the end.

This seems like great advice if I wasn't a complete dumbass

its really easy, I was about to pay for it till someone gave me similar advice, written a bit more clearly.  It could save you 80 bucks for 20 minutes of work.

The drainage thing wouldn't explain why it keeps running, if in fact it keeps running.

Dude, that fridge is rough ridin' stupid. Glass doesn't insulate for crap and the cubic footage of that thing is probably similar to an igloo cooler.

my understanding is that it would if the compressor is half frozen straining to cool the unit.
