If it's spring break you are worried about, just buy a condo in padre or somewhere.  Maybe miami, market is still real soft there. Go get him a good one on the cheap.

I'm open to others.  :dunno:

mutual fund/index fund

Have to pay capital gains though right?  Think index will outperform gold by that much?

You have to pay capital gains on savings bonds and gold coins, too, fwiw. And yes, gold is insanely expensive right now. I would say there is better than a 50% chance that you would be way ahead to just buy the gold coin 20 years from now and give it to him then.

Is there a cool toy that you think might be the next transformer? If so, I would buy the kid one of those, only not let him take it out of the box and only come over to your house to view it on display. By the time that kid is 20, it could be worth a whole lot of money. Just look at KSUBlumpkin. He has enough transformers to buy 2 more houses now. You can't beat that investment, especially not with gold.

Like a 20 year old kid is going to pay capital gains on a coin.

Totally agree on the Blumpkin angle, though.
