Apparently I suck at it so I'd like some advice.

I work late so all the couples at work can go out. I get off at 8ish, workout, watch the office, and hit the hay.

Make your own small edible arrangement.  I did this a few years ago.  It was cheap and quick.  Spend 10 minutes at the store, ~$30, and 15 minutes putting it together.  Buy the following:

  • Dark tinted, transparent glass - think a little bigger than a highball glass
  • play dough
  • chop sticks
  • melon baller
  • cookie cutter - preferably flower shaped
  • grapes
  • strawberrys
  • a melon
  • a pineapple
  • broccoli
  • toothpicks

Fill the glass with playdough.  Stack the grapes on 4-5 sticks.  Put a strawberry on the ends of another 4-5 sticks.  Cut a 3-4 pineapple slices and punch out some flower shapes with the cookie cutter.  Cut out an equal number of melon balls.  Break the toothpick into a few small pieces and use these to attach the melon balls in the middle of the pineapple cutouts.  Put the pineapple cutouts on the ends of some sticks.  Cut down the back ends of the sticks so when you stick them in the play dough they don't stick out of the glass too far.  Put the broccoli on top of the playdough to look like grass.  Boom, done.  Looks something like this below:

Mrs. Jakesie hates flowers and thinks it's dumb to spend money on Valentine's Day. We usually go out to eat the day before or after to avoid the crowd, but we go out to eat once a week any way so even that's not really an event. I love it.

Mrs.hamburg is the same way.  I haven't done anything for her since the above thing in 2009.  Our anniversary is 12/30.  She has a list of a peice of jewelry for every anniversary.  Every year she picks out what she wants (which is never cheap) and that counts for Christmas, Anniversary, and Valentine's Day.  If it's really expensive, it counts for her March birthday as well.  I haven't bought anything for her for any of those occasions for years.

Wow a gal with disdain for Valentine's Day gifts.  Congrats, Mrs. Jakesie sounds like a keeper.
