Like with OBz and KSU, it's about the people.  I just got into it 30 minutes ago with bike sharer.

yep if the scooter people would a) yield to pedestrians b) stay off sidewalks and c) not park them all over the sidewalks impeding sidewalk traffic, i’d probably hate them 10% less

but since no consequences, all of these things are problems

also, I live in an area that’s concentrated with them so it’s just all too much

no one bike shares because it’s so stupid so who cares? not me bros

Office gave out air masks. School cancelled. My gym is closed tomorrow. It's pretty bad.

It's a symbol of gentrification. The thought is it is a sign that the area is becoming more wealthy and current residents will be pushed out.

GUESS WHO WORKS FOR SCOOT NOW (not me)

People hate scooters because they discourage people from using public transit and make a mess of the sidewalks. Both are true. Also people hate them because they're run by bad person startups.

Did this not already happen long ago? Or is it the old gentrifiers who are now in danger of being regentrified?

Around 16th and mission it's mostly Latinos still. Not exactly the Castro, where you'd have a point as white gays are being forced out. Like, it's inevitable that the mission is going to be stupid expensive long term, but there's still plenty of working poor in the neighborhood holding out as long as they can.

I don't really understand why someone would feel entitled to live somewhere they can no longer afford to live. At the same time, I'm not trying to get into a huge debate about it, because whatever . . .

It's a really interesting discussion. I used to have a similar view to you but have definitely become more sympathetic over time. A lot of folks displaced pretty much have to leave the area completely, which would kind of suck if you grew up in the neighborhood or were raising kids or had any sort of social circle in place. It isn't like these people can move to a shittier SF neighborhood, they have to move to at least Stockton or something.

Also California has Prop 13 which prevents homeowners from ever having their property tax reassessed as home values increase, because we can't have homeowners forced out of a neighborhood they can no longer afford. It's pretty mumped up given how few rent controlled units there are.

What bothers me more than people thinking they are entitled to live in expensive areas are the people who stop any new housing from being built. Lots of otherwise smart people don't think you can soften rent increases by increasing the housing supply. It's an odd union of extreme progressive renters and wealthy conservative homeowners who generally lead the charge against any new housing and it makes me crazy.

that's a good TL/DR summary mich. I pretty much dislike all of the people involved after reading it.

My Instagram feed is full of Bay areans acting like rough ridin' brave warriors for walking around in an N95 mask in air slightly worse than your typical Tuesday in Delhi. It's pretty obnoxious.
