Understood. What else would he say, whether true or not. Of course, Musberger always loved him...not sure whether that counts for anything. Brent?

Sorry, wasn't trying to slight you since I was thinking of posting it too.  I just think its absurd when admins get involved with stuff like this.  I could see if she was staff or a student athlete, but past that, its his/wife's business.

Will this tarnish him enough? Prolly needs more booze, but Betty Ford U is waiting with open arms, Major.

Why is this even news at all? At k-state teachers have to take a class about how to date their students just in case. Is a football coach any different?

i'm not at all plugged in on the situation, but was he in a position of power over the female student in question?  that distinction usually changes things.  imo, this is between himself and his wife, the woman he had an affair with, and the normal media scrutiny that comes with a relatively public figure in an affair.

Texas will get sued because this is going to be used in a lawsuit saying they treated Major differently, which they did.

It also means Dodds is probably fired, and this will get merged in the cigars thread.

The first thing that struck me is that the announcement didn't identify gender, which seems a little odd.

Secondly, when its two adults involved (outside of a high school senior), there's no distinction between a position of power. It's perfectly legal for a boss/secretary to bang at the office. Now it may be against company policy, but it's not illegal.

I agree on your first point, but I don't think UT getting sued means Dodds is getting canned.  they'll settle out of court and it will all be taken care of.

Does it say anything to effect of whether the student was working in the athletics dept?  I would think there is a big difference between banging an athlete you coach, banging a fellow employee, and banging a random student.

Rumors now that she was part of the Sports Medicine team that went to the game.  Picture floating around of her on the field at the Fiesta Bowl in her UT Sports Medicine polo.

The more I think about the, the much more likely it is that she was part of the traveling squad.  Unless Major just really, really wanted to cheat on his 9-month pregnant wife and saw the cover of Phoenix as the perfect place to do it, it makes much more sense that in a busy bowl week if he was going to nail someone it would be someone he already had a relationship with.

Just saw the pictures of the girl.  Even if you're a scumbag who cheats on your very pregnant wife, why with that girl?

Major screwed a trainer, DeLoss found out about it, disciplined him internally, didn't notify any of their BOR about it, and he fired the black, female track coach for screwing an athlete years ago.  Now Texas is going to lose a lot of money in lawsuits.

On top of that, DeLoss' dream project has been a PR nightmare, they've been vilified nationally for being the greedy 400 lb. gorilla in conference realignment (regardless of whether or not its true), and Mack is still coaching even after the last few years.

Dodds was already unpopular and seen as past his prime.  There's apparently a groundswell of support to throw ungodly sums of money at Oliver Luck.  Add all of that together and you see how this will end up merging with the cigars thread.

Did Deloss fire her?  Everything on the UT websites makes is look like Women's AD Chris Plonsky reports to the UP, not Dodds.  There is an article from two weeks ago saying that UP Powers was given the authority to rework Dodds' and Plonksy's contracts.  It looks to me like the chain-of-command for the fired women's track coach goes through Plonsky to Powers.  Not sure how they can hang the Kearney firing on Dodds if they have a women's AD that reports to the UP.  I know Dodds has the clout around there, but if you want to hang whoever said it was OK to fire Kearney but not fire Applewhite, it's the UP.

Doesn't matter who forced her to resign, she's suing the athletic department and university. They have to (and should) fire Major and settle with this track coach after.

I understand and agree with that, but the post I quoted wasn't about if Major should be fired or Kearney should be settled with.  It was about if Dodds can be hung for the combo of the Major not firing/Kearney firing situation.  I don't think you can hang Dodds because he didn't fire Major 4 years ago, then 4 years later the women's AD and UP decided to fire the women's track coach.  It appears to me the statement that Dodds fired the women's track coach is not correct.  That's all.  Part of the basis of the lawsuit will be unfair treatment because Major wasn't fired 4 years earlier and she was.  That's on the UP, not Dodds.

@mikefinger Asked a UT official if this is coming out now because of ex-track coach Bev Kearney's potential lawsuit. Answer: "What do you think?"

@mikefinger: UT regents release statement saying they learned of Applewhite reprimand "with great disappointment and sadness."

Seems like they're surprised and pissed about the punishment major received.
