Congratulations to her. It seems that the the future of the company sucked, so why delay the inevitable? They are giving her a chance to to be the first mover in a strong economy at the right time of year.

So right before christmas our new vp said in 18 months our department would lose 54 of 100 some people.  Half.  They are oursourcing a pretty decent size, the rest gone in 18 months.  That night, i applied for 2 companies i really want to work for, and an old manager recommended me for some positions at his current firm also would work for.  Had an interview today, another thursday, and another next week.
The question is, even if i dont get these jobs should i apply for voluntary severence?  I havent been here long enough to get much, maybe a month and a half or two of pay, but it wont be available after Jan 31.  Is it worth the risk of not having a job because i think i can get one quickly?

the hiring process it takes a long time, even if your old friend wants to hire you. between the time the company decides to offer you, you negotiate a salary, drug test, background check, etc until you collect your first paycheck- there's a lot that goes on... so, like, longer than 6-8 weeks is what i'm saying.

I thought that I have heard that voluntary sev can jeopardize unemployment after the sev expires.  Just thinking that our guy should know that, if it's true, before jumping.

This was my first thought.  Be careful on wording of severance.

If you have them draft the terms appropriately, yes.  Make it more of a settlement than a severance.  Doubt most companies would do that though for an entry-level employee especially when there are 53 others in the same boat.

Jabeez if you want to keep your job for longer while you look file a bogus claim with the EEOC.  Then they pretty much can't get rid of you because it could look like a retaliation.  It's pretty bush league, though.

Thanks for the advice guys. Jan 31 is the deadline to request the severance package.  So i guess i can see where i am at in the process of these other positions before then and decide to apply. I am geussing they would then negotiate with me when to leave, because i would have to hand off projects to other coworkers. I just havent been here long enough to accrue a good package, but i didnt even think about they would negotiate it.
