Green Shirts in the OOD
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:35:24 AM »
For years now, I've watched people, in ugly green shirts and black pants, and of different shapes and genders, walk down the aisles during timeouts, and after the game, and protect access to the court. They seem to be guarding the court from some anticipated rush or attack, although I sense none of them could accomplish that.

Perhaps this is part of some criminal justice internship KSU has, or a Secret Service internship program. After all, they seem to poise themselves just like Secret Service agents...scanning the crowd while the action occurs behind them.

Whatever the explanation, Currie's wasting his money on it. My bet is there will be no court rushing this year.

I'm going off my memory here, and it's a little fuzzy, but I think I can provide a little insight.  They aren't making sure nobody runs onto the court, they are making sure nobody throws anything onto the court.  In the late 80s during the Steve Henson era there was some kind of an incident where something was thrown onto the court during a timeout, I don't really remember the details.  K-State's athletic department was pretty angry about it and they responded by having the ushers stand at the bottom of the stands during timeouts and watch the crowd to identify any rule breakers.

There was quite a hubub about it at the time.

A much older K-Stater told me about a time we threw bananas on the floor during a KU game.

The banana story was from the 70s, my parents told me that one.  When K-State played at KU, the fans in Lawrence threw hotdogs on the court because they said one of the K-state players was a hot dog.  In retaliation, when KU played in Manhattan K-State fans through bananas at a KU player because they claimed he looked like a gorilla.

The bananas created quite a mess to clean up and the nationally broadcast game was delayed for several minutes.  Whatever station that was on vowed to never again broadcast a K-State game and they kept thier word for several years.

This is kind of a dumb thread. Have you not seen the Sprint Center ushers run out onto the court and stand at the corners and free throw lines? They look much more ridiculous. Every arena does it in some fashion.

When they used to be pink shirts I asked one of them to help me find my seat.  They couldn't find it.  So there's that.

The kids started shying away from the live chickens bc when thrown into the air the chicken would be so overwhelmed by everything going on they would often die of heart failure in mid flight. That's a true story.

And?

Have designed a couple experiments.  Will be creating a prototype on the 3D printer today.

I think you need those silicone potholder gloves to hold and throw it and a cigar lighting mini torch thing to heat up the penny.

IIRC there were live chickens thrown the first time we beat KU at home in like a million years.  It could have been the year before though, all I know is I was there.  Also, PETA hated it and at least one of the chickens died.
