Very weird list. I think they are using a bot to write those things nowadays. I did not know that Marysville was a "retirement destination." Maybe for folks from Bremen or Beattie?

An important detail to remember about Coffeyville is that from the 1930 census thru the 1980, it maintained a population of over 15k; maintaining over 17k for about 40 of those years consecutively.

There are now less than 9,000 permanent residents there as of the 2020 census.

Best to worst:

Salina > Hutchinson > Garden City > Dodge City

I was going to make an argument on Hutch being in front of Salina, but the Salina Mall vs the Hutch Mall /Empty Ghost Mall is probably worth enough points to push Salina back in front. But there is a large gap between Hutch and Garden City.

Update: Salina mall now also a ghost mall, but Salina downtown is actually very nice now with a lot going on.

Holy mother of God it’s insanely expensive to go out to eat in South East Kansas

17.99 for chicken fingers and fries

It's a shame Topeka is such a stain right in the middle of beautiful towns like LFK and MHK. If it weren't for Topeka we could have an amazing KS River Corridor from KC to MHK, we could call it the silicon prairie or something.

((I've never actually spent much time in Topeka besides stopping off at diabetes gulch (aka Wanamaker) on the way back to KC))

Moving to Topeka this spring. But we bought a house that has 4 family members that babysit for free within a 2 mile radius. So in my extremely biased view, it's the best town in Kansas by a lot.

Plenty of towns are a mix of blue collar working poor and $40k a year government drones (Jefferson City!), but don't have the inescapable soul crushing dead end feel of Topeka.
